Mum
has been enthusiastically making steamed bread of maize and wheat flour for several
times recently. We gleaned many ears of corn in the plot behind our backyard
last fall. Mum used to give them to elder brother for feeding his chickens. This
time she decided to have the corn ground into flour as food. Long before, she
had been good at making the bread. But now her works seemed quite commonplace. Especially
the other day, she deeply regretted for making the worst bread in her life,
which was shrunken and hard. The dough had been overheated on the kang that it couldn't
rise again. This morning as soon as I entered the house I smelled the delicious
odor of new bread. Both mum and I were very glad to see the swelling yellow
bread fresh from the steamer this time.
