First elder sister's children

Hot 1516 views. 2014-2-6 23:07 | apprentice, children, eighteen, sister, living

First sister has two sons and one daughter. They have all grown up and had their own children. Although none of them had finished middle school, they are living well and can earn their keep independently.

My first nephew gave up his schooling and became an apprentice bricklayer at fifteen. He got married at eighteen when I was still single and ten years his senior. He has been working at different construction sites not far from his home since. He has two daughters and the older one has been married. He's head of his family. During busy farming seasons he occupies himself with field work. Sometimes he plowed the fields with a tractor for others for making money. He built his family a spacious air-conditioned house with a large gate through which his motor vehicles can go freely. He had been dismayed at his being sonless until the birth of the first son of his brother.

But first sister's grandsons did not come easily. They are a compensation for the heavy losses and the ordeals the whole family has suffered and gone through. It was after a failed engagement and a divorce that my second nephew fathered two sons when he remarried.

Second nephew is a cute and social guy compared with his brother who is reserved and cowardly like me. He works as a casual electrician and plumber in Tientsin. He once served his apprenticeship with one of his relatives in Peking. He rented one and a half rooms at 200 a month in a Tientsin suburb. He dwells there with his wife and elder son during working periods. His ear rings, tattoos, bald head, local accent and sunglasses are of much help to him when he goes to some forbidden places as a passport.

Niece invests a large sum in raising about four thousand pigeons with her capable husband who is experienced in breeding. In addition, the young couple has other sources of incomes. Their family can be called a well-to-do one.

The past 10-20 years had been a period of change. Everybody did their own thing. Some are fortunate to hit it right and strike it rich. It all depends on what you have to offer at the right time. Most of them became rich by saving sensibly and venturing at the right time. Education can only give you a good fixed income but having something to offer or business ventures created quite a lot of rich people. I spoke to some tourists who came from North China and asked them how they manage to make so much money. Each of them had their own way of getting rich. One of them had a small car repair shop and when more people bought cars, he opened a car parts shop which did well, then he went on to open another one. Later he dealt in used cars which generated a lot of income for him. Another one had a simple shop in the beginning, he saved enough money to open a supermarket, then opened a few more and then bought shop spaces which increased in value making him rich. He said the same thing cannot be done now because a lot of people is in the business.

People are still quite traditional because they believe that a family is not complete until they have a son to carry on the family name. These traditions are hard to change. Can't blame them for wishing for a son because if they don't have a son, they would face a lot of pressure from the community.

At present, people are living in a complex and competitive society having to compare their own wealth with others. There is a need to show wealth by owning expensive homes and cars. It is really not easy to live a simple life.

Everyone should understand that only a few people are rich and most are just ordinary, so why waste our lives by chasing wealth beyond our reach?

So long as you have lived a decent life and have a regular income is good enough.
