Indifference to others' death

When I reached the outskirts of our town from school, I was stopped by a call from one of my former colleagues in his car drawing up at the roadside. He informed me that wife of Mr. Zhang has died of cerebral hemorrhage. Zhang was also one of my former colleagues. He has been raising pigs for some years. Before he was transferred to another school, I had returned him all the gifts of money he had given me. Later he went to our former school inviting my other colleagues and me to a banquet for starting a business on selling pig feed. I didn't attend the dinner；neither did I give him any gift of money. Afterwards when we met in the street, he never greeted me any more. Now on the death of his wife, how can I go to condole with him as I owe him nothing？

Reply sunnyv 2014-5-7 12:58: You must have heard the elders say ''take a step backwards to appreciate the greatness of the ocean and the clear blue skies''. You are fortunate to have a cohesive and healthy family, so why be angry over small misdeeds of others? You certainly have the self-confidence, grace and ability to forgive others. You can ignore him socially to show your displeasure, but at times of grief or death, we all should show sympathy towards others, at least with a few word of consolation. There is no such deep anger or resentment that one needs to seek venegance towards the misfortune of others.

Reply moli 2014-5-9 15:15: There are two choices for you, one is that his wife's death has nothing to do with you, the other is to give him some money.
