Collect pine cones

It occurred to me to collect the cones as they first came into my view this morning. There were so many under the pines before our teaching house. They are hard and dry and can be used as fuels. They fell from the branches on which the new ones have taken their place. At the final period in the morning I went to collect them with a bag. I should have given a geography lesson to Grade Seven if Ms Xiao hadn’t taken the students away to practice their drill formations. Children's Day celebrations will be held tomorrow. Two boys and one girl from Grade One came to my help. By the end of the period I had picked up all the cones there. They half filled my bag.

- Pine cones have more than one purpose. They provide fuel for fires. I know of at least one species where the pine cones will not open and release their seeds until after a fire. The fire burns other trees that cannot tolerate fire while pines thrive in a fire-ecology driven habitat. So, the cones help eliminate competing vegetation when they burn with the needles!
