I did not know that we were not going to school today as planned. Yesterday I was sent to the Central School marking the exam papers of Grade Six students with several other rural school teachers. And no one told me the sudden change of our working schedule. So this morning I still set out for work earlier than usual as required by our vice-chief. When I passed the gate of the Central School I sensed something unusual. There were no school buses full of students coming over. Nevertheless, I cycled on with suspicion. At the west end of our town I overheard a returned student saying that the test wouldn't be held today in answer to a passer-by's question. Now I became hesitant whether to go to work or not. Upon my arrival at the nearest village to the town, I got down from my bike and asked our chief by phone if we went to work today. Hearing the negative answer, I turned back at once.
