Today was the first day of our new semester. All teachers from the only three village schools of our town were gathered at the Central School joining their counterparts there for a meeting. I went there in a hurry just before 8 o'clock as required. But the meeting didn't start until one hour later. The newly appointed headmaster of the Central School opened the meeting with a long speech which lasted about one and a half hours. His voice was low and sometimes turned into indiscernible murmuring. He announced the results of the final examinations last semester and showed obvious dissatisfaction with the low grades of some subjects. He urged the teachers who were responsible for the bad results to make all efforts achieving the goals needed. He offered no solution to the shortage of teachers in our school. He just warned that anyone ignoring his duty in the Central School would be probably exiled to a village school to fill the vacancy there. As an incompetent English teacher, I failed to have the average score of any of the three classes I taught reach 60 marks. The majority of the students hated to learn the subject or abandoned study completely. I can hardly turn the situation around for the better.
