Recently I watched parts of the TV serial Suffering Is a Blessing with great interest which has been rare for a long time. The play reflects the simple life of the young intellectuals returned to town from the countryside and their struggle in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. I like the atmosphere in the drama. Madame Han is so amiable and agreeable for she speaks with a trace of accent from which I find the fascination of the native tongue. Gao Yan’s mother plays her role vividly showing great care to her. She impressed me deeply with her unique fluency plus proper gestures and an unusually mobile face. Ms Duanmu’s elegance is really attractive.
