A slick taxi driver

Mr. Zhang, one of my former colleagues, works as a night watchman at the central school. He drives a taxi by day on the side. This morning I hired him to drive mother and me to the county town for having her fingerprints registered as the past two years. A toll－gate lies midway, which collects ten yuan from each passing vehicle once. The last two times both our taxis went through the gate and were levied tolls. This time Mr. Zhang decided to make a detour to avoid the toll－house. I was puzzled when he stopped his car at a tall building on the outskirts of the county town. He explained to me the former Social Insurance Office has moved there. He ushered us to the reception desk on the large first floor, more convenient than before when mother had to go upstairs, where instead of the registration of fingerprints, the clerk took a picture of mother after checking her identity card. We would have met difficulties had we gone by bus as planned.

- Registering and keeping our updated identity with the authorities is an important and essential task. Anybody who neglects such a duty would regret it sooner of later. Those identity documents are the first step in future dealings with the government and organizations. Never overlook or neglect these duties.
Previously, going to these government offices used to be a tough and straining experience but nowadays, those offices are well organized, computerized and provide reasonable services. You made the right decision by taking a taxi there, otherwise, you would be frustrated as going to these places with an elderly parent could be quite challenging.
It is better to describe the taxi driver as slick instead of cunning because cunning has a sinister meaning.

- Oh, seems you have got the wrong meaning. He is actually grateful that the Taxi driver has brought him to the right place and had he gone by bus himself with his mother, then he would be in a mess.
