The service of the central heating system to the local apartment blocks has ended for a period. It’s early spring, but I still wear the thick trousers for winter. The other day as I retired for the night I felt the mattress too cool for lying on. I jumped out of bed without hesitation to take out another fur mattress and the large one stuffed with goose feathers from the cabinet. I spread the two upon the former three layers of mattresses with the large folded lengthwise. Then I felt better on top of the terrace. By the way, one of our staff, also a flat–dweller, said she had to add another quilt at night besides an electric blanket underneath. Compared with this upset scene, is the comfortable warmth enjoyed by mother day and night on the heated kang in our bungalow, which is desirable in this season and late autumn for those residents in apartments but out of their reach.
