Mother wore herself out after carrying home large heaps of deserted corn stalks nearby within two successive days. I was very surprised to see the stalks the first day and strongly disapproved of her job. Moreover, I told her not to fetch them any more. But she was deaf to my advice. The next day she went again and brought back almost the same amount as the last. This time I found her quite exhausted and collapsed on the kang. She asked me whether there was any ointment left at home. I knew she had overworked herself. Because there was no ointment available I had to go to the pharmacy for some. I have applied plasters on her back and sides for quite some time. Her pain has been somewhat alleviated. Seeing her lie down or get up with difficulty and a pained expression on her face, I pointed out satirically that she picked up the sesame and lost the watermelon. She always tries to occupy herself in doing something and sometimes disregards her inability for her senior age. At her leisure she’s likely to be in a bad mood repeating the unhappy thing in the past.

- Aged parents are always like that. They need to prove that they are still useful and capable, so they unnecessarily burden themselves. My mother was also similar. You have to explain to her that she has already completed her mission in life by managing a family, raising children healthily and done all she need to do. Now is the time to slow down and watch the fruit of her life. Sometimes, you need to praise her and encourage her so that she still feels being a useful person.
There are some dishes, she could cook more tasty better than me. I would ask her to stand beside me and guide me how to cook like she did. She felt there is still something she could do better than me and appeared satisfied.
They also like to repeatedly talk about past unhappy events, but you need to tell her that everyone has bitter experience. The way to a happy life is to be happy about the present and forget the past unhappy things. Her life is successful so those unhappy things have no weight.
Having an elderly parent around is warm and assuring, so treasure it.

- Some senile people, espeically, like our parents, usually want to do something like that. Because no one else wants to show that he or she is too old to do manual work anymore.
Actually they have done well, no need to risk health and life by doing in that way. So I persuade parents not to do much work and shall spend some time to rest up well in the twilight of their life. Firstly they were stubborn and did not take my words. Now they have realized it and adapted to enjoy the leisurable life style.
