Yesterday I finished a job I’m proud of, which mother had thought impossible. With an iron sheet, I wrapped the sheltering slab of steel and concrete protruding above our house door. The slab had been mended for several times before by plastering cement. The edges collapsed here and there from time to time, very dangerous. This time I decided to use iron sheet for the failures with cement. It would cost ￥150 if I had it done by a craftsman, including the expense of a new sheet and his pay. I rejected the expensive and unnecessary method. Last semester, I luckily got several deserted iron sheets at school I urgently needed. I carried them back with great difficulty. Brother had promised to help me complete the project because he is skilled in carpentry and has necessary tools. But he is always busy and now he is to make a long trip to our native land tomorrow. I thought I couldn’t wait any longer despite the fact that I was not sure of myself. Late afternoon yesterday seeing it was fine and windless, I decided to carry out the work immediately. First, I climbed up the slab measuring its length and width. And I found the sheet not big enough as I had imagined and it can only wrap the front edge and cover the sides. Then I bent the edges of the sheet in turn to suit the size of the slab. Finally I fixed the sheet on the slab with pieces of wire. I’ m satisfied with my work in spite of mother’ s disapproval.
