Tuesdays with Morrie--an Old Man,a Young Man,and Life's Greatest Lesson
Anyone who has benefited from the advice and experience of an older and wiser person is likely to immediately identify with
the author of the American best seller Tuesdays with Morrie. Albom, who had been close with Schwartz during his college
years at Brandeis, reconnected with his former professor, visiting him in suburban Boston and eventually coming every
Tuesday. The old man taught Albom valuable lessons about life and death while at the same time fighting a losing battle with
Lou Gehrig's disease. Tuesdays with Morrie has been praised for its accessible style.
I was moved by the Morrie's uplifting attitude toward death, he tells his student that "once you learn
how to die, you learn how to live". I can't imagine if I were in his position ,what I would do in the rest of my life. Confronted with the terminal disease, the old man doesn't show his desperation
instead of meditating on the the basic truths of life that we have always known, but may have forgotten or
have simply chosen to ignore.
He tells us"Aging is not just decay, you know . It's growth, it's more than the negative that you're
going to die, it's also the positive that you undertand you're going to die, and that you live a
better life because of it ." You see, people always say"Oh. if i were young......". It reflects
unsatisfied lives, lives that haven't found meaning. Because if you've found meaning in your life,
you don't want to go back, you want to go forward. You want to see more, do more, you can't wait
until 65. If you're always battling against getting older, you're always going to be unhappy,
because it will happen anyhow.
