As an English learner, I have to admit that my knowledge and understanding to the World War II had been influenced unavoidably by American history depicters and Hollywood movies. In my mind, all Germans in Nazi Germany were zealous, naïve and loyal blindly; and all German soldiers were cold-hearted and ruthless killing machine.

 Unsere Mütter totally deconstructs my understanding to Germans in Nazi Germany and made me realize how biased I used to be. It tells the story of five ordinary German young people who are good friends from childhood involved into the war voluntarily or passively. At the beginning of the movie, these five young people gathered together to hold a farewell party for the two brothers among them who are off to the battle field in Soviet Union in the summer of 1941 and they optimistically agreed on their reunion on that Christmas. However, it took them four years to reunite and only three of them made it.

Compared with Hollywood movies about the war, this movie seems more real and impartial. It mainly focuses on those ordinary people in the war, depicting their inner sides, their fears, their humanity. No individual heroism, no deliberate praise to some wise war leaders or no praise to either party of the war. Thus it seems more like a documentary film to me.
