to be a great listener

825 views. 2011-4-19 11:03

i have never think about how important listening is, until i read a story when i was a junior in university. the plot of it is pretty simple but the thought which the auther want to express is deep. the main meaning about that story is listening is powerful medicine. i enjoyed the whole process when i was reading it, not only made me rethink the importance of listening, also made me feel something i have never realized when i was a listener. i appreciate it.
each story of us is different. some are detailed; others are vague. some have a beginning, middle, and end. others wander without a clear conclusion. some are true, others not. yet all those things do not really matter. what matters to the storyteller is that their story is heard--without interruption, assumption, or judgment.
listening to someone's story costs less than expensive diagnostic testing but is key to healing and diagnosis.
just stop, sit down and pay great attention to listen...you are going to a great listener.

I thought I understood this from a long time ago, but recently I found I wasn't really following the logic when interacting with others! Perhaps subconsciously I was too eager to be heared rather than to listen. Seems most people have the tendency to speak more, listen less.

yeah, i agree with you in this point. the thing is, listeners are needed in this world, no one force you to be a listener, just follow you heart and be real. do it if you like it, or be a speaker. no speaker no listener...this world needs speakers, too~

Everytime after chat or calling,I always feel uncomfortable,as I talk much, and make other as a listener all the time,in this case I couldn't get much news from others, however the value of the chat or calling is sharing. So,now I should change my habits, and firstly should learn to guid others to talk.

i agree with your view. for many times that we neglect voices around us, and we only care about our own voice heard by others. however taking the opposite stance, we should first be a good and paient listener. so take time and listen to others.

Most people learn how to talk, but almost nobody learns how to listen while the latter brings you usually more.

That's an unexpected point of view, I wish I had figured it out myself. It becomes habitual for me to subconsciously require myself to comply with external expectations. I thought people need listeners, and the world is lack of listeners, so I should learn to listen. But I didn't realize I should also feel justified to take care of my own needs and expectations.

I believe we are good listeners in some cases, but not always. When we talk to superiors, we listen attentively and comment cautiously. However, we are more speakers than listeners when we talk to our family or friends. Because deep in our heart, we all wish to voice our opinions and to have them heard, and friendship or love enable us to throw away our mask and try to be the true self.
