Somali Pirates

1044 views. 2011-9-3 17:08

The other day my roommates and I went to the small shops outside school to buy shoe rack. After we bargained with him for a few minutes, we made a deal. The shopkeeper promised to assemble our shoe racks, since we bought three shoe racks and it was not easy to do this job we decided to help him. Then, two black students came to the shopkeeper, giving him 5 yuan. They wanted to buy a bottle of water. What surprised me is the black student spoke Chinese, although not so good but we can understand what he said. The one speaking Chinese looked like a bully, while the other one stood far away since it is none of his business. When the shopkeeper passed the bottle of water to the black student, he grabbed six disposable cups quickly but the shopkeeper spoke loudly and didn't want him to take the cups. Later we got the information from the shopkeeper, he told us they usually behavior like bandits and owe him some money and what's more, they only have two people drinking water but always want six cups for free, which is very unreasonable. In fear that the shopkeeper will charge him for the cups, the student kept on asking the shopkeeper give him the change constantly. The shopkeeper's wife seemed to be afraid that they will cause big problems so she gave the change to them soon and two black students left complacently. The shopkeeper knew well of them, and he said they were poor and he called them Somali pirates. In addition, he was a little angry perhaps he thought his wife could not be so scared. A teacher in our school once told me the majority of black students here are descendants or relatives of African chiefs or somebody. So in my mind, they don't lack money. But what I witnessed that day left a bad impression on me.

sheena, whether this is the first funny thing in your new school? just read the title, i think it's an old story from some books. when i read its end, i see, its your true experience. foreigners maybe surely some different way or value to deal with actions. now in our country, more and more black students in all over our cities college, some of them maybe rich family, some maybe very poor. in the Africa, most countries still lack of wealth, in deep poverty.china better more.

What the two black kids did, has nothing to do with the color of their skin, but the environment they grew up, and the education they received. They're not bad, at least not yet. They just need some help.

i met some black people before. some of them were really kind and frendly, while some others behaved like bandits. since they are adults already, i guess it would be hard to change. on the other hand in every society you can always find some "bad" guys.

Indeed it is what I saw nearby our school. I think no matter where we come from, what colour our skin is, among us there are good guys and bad guys. Maybe I could not look on them through coloured glasses.

I agree with you that their behavior is related to the environment they live and the education they receive. Perhaps they think they are supeior to other students since they are overseas students. Everyone has the chance to make himself a better person. Hope they will recognize what they did will do harm to both sides and never do it again.
