We should have courage.

404 views. 2011-5-20 13:25 |

Life is hard for us.Sometimes we don't know what to do,sometimes although we kow what to do,we lack persistence and courage because we wonder wether we can make it or whether it is deserved .But we don't have the answer ,and nobody can tell us the answer,so what we can do is just to go for it,challenge all the difficulties.

Bully the white bearded old man, but do not bully the poor youth. One day the dragon is gonna go through phoenix. I think I heard this Chinese epithet somewhere.

where did you get this? can we bully the white bearded old man? to me it's just the opposite. the old is supposed to be respected in chinese culture. what does the second one mean? i'm kind of puzzled. can you explain it to me? i've never heard of it myself. maybe i'm sort of ignorant.

Haha my poor Chinese knowledge, but there is indeed a very popular Chinese saying which means You can underestimate a old man but you should under underestimate an average youth. I would see if I could get hold of the written Chinese version of this epithet.

Hi Rich.

Here is the Chinese saying I was referring to:

"宁欺白首翁,莫欺少年"

"One can underestimate the grey bearded old man,
but do not underestimate an energetic youth".

now i got it. frankly i was not familiar with that saying myself. it was from ancient times, so cannot be understood literally. yes your interpretation is right. here 欺 doesn't mean bully, but underestimate or despise. this saying is generally right, for the youth have unlimited potential while the elderly are in the final stage of life, and generally weaker. however, the old are not necessarily at a disadvantage. actually they are usu experienced and possibly full of wisdom. nice talking with you. in fact i learned something about chinese from you! :-)

You don't have to be so humble. It is plain to see that you master both Chinese and English superbly. A lot to learn from you.
