A crowd of strangers has rescued a five-year-old girl trapped underneath a sports utility vehicle in the eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou, in Zhejiang province. The girl and her mother were on their way to the market when the accident happened.

The incident reminds many Chinese of another toddler. Back in October, passers-by ignored a two-year-old girl who’d been hit by two cars. She later died in hospital. But this time, there was a much happier ending.

A traffic camera shows a driver is backing up her vehicle. Nearby, there’s a mother and her 5-year-old daughter. They appear to argue, and the girl suddenly squats. The mother continues on. Then, the accident happens.

A witness said, "The girl, for some reason, squats on the road and is angry with her mother. She doesn’t want to go. Then the car is backing in the direction of the girl. Maybe the driver cannot see the small girl. The girl is under the car and gets stuck. Then her mother is shouting."

The mother, Ms. Zeng, heads back and doesn’t see her daughter. She stops the car and cries for help. The driver, Ms. Jin, jumps out. She finds the girl is stuck under the SUV. They can’t pull her out because her bag is caught under the chassis.

"Quickly, lift the car", someone shouts. Dozens of people rush to help. The SUV weighs more than a ton.

A witness said, "She’s caught in the chassis, right in the middle. We can’t reach her."

The girl is rescued, too frightened to cry. The driver takes her to the hospital. The doctor says she’s okay,

Her ordeal is over, and the five-year-old goes back to class.

74-year-old Mr. Qian and a worker from a nearby factory are two of the rescuers.

Mr. Qian said, "Saving people is the most important. No matter how old you are, you should contribute what you can."

Worker from a nearby factory said, "It’s no big deal to help just a little when you see someone stuck under the car."

The mother says she’s grateful to the people who came forward, all of them strangers. When she rushed to the hospital, she had no time to thank them. It’s a happy ending for everyone involved.
