Creative Writing, Round 2

921 views. 2012-8-13 06:17 |

For today's exercise I chose #3 off of the list at creativewritingprompts.com . It said to use a dictionary but instead I went to a website that lists SAT words (a standardized test that high school students have to take here in the US before they go to college) and picked 10 random ones from there. I'll list what I think the words sound like then their actual definitions! :3

1. lampoon
Lampoon just sounds really silly. When I say it the first thing that comes to mind is a dolphin. He's chilling on the beach, specifically in a lagoon, and smirking at you. That smug bastard.
(What it actually means: ridicule; spoof)
2. acrid
Okay this time I thought of a jungle gym set. You know those bars that kids always hang upside down on? Those, but they're empty.
(What it actually means: sharp; pungent [usually in reference to tastes and smells])
3. caucus
Caucus is a llama (or alpaca) climbing up a mountain. He has a really colorful blanket on his back.
(What it actually means: type of private political meeting)
4. impecunious
First thing I thought of? Those white birds with the silly pink tufts on their heads. Like they're rockstars or something. The word itself sounds oily. I think it's the "cyoo" part.
(What it actually means: having no money)
5. chimerical
Smoke. Sparkly thick white smoke. It feels magical.
(What it actually means: changeable; unstable)
6. fecund
Something really filthy. I means absolutely covered in some kind of thick, wet, brown stuff. Yuck.
(What it actually means: fertile)
7. coalesce
This one puts me in mind of a traveling theater.
(What it actually means: come together; merge)
8. augment
Reminds me of swamps. Don't follow the marsh lights!
(What it actually means: increase; make bigger)
9. rancor
Like being at the circus! It's loud, it's crowded, and the ceiling is striped and disconcerting.
(What it actually means: resentment; animosity; bad feeling)
10. pinnacle
I like how this word sounds! It's bouncy. It's like a massive ice cream sundae with a cherry on top. Plus lots and lots of whipped cream. Mmmmm!
(What it actually means: topmost point)

This exercise felt a little more pointless then the previous one but it was still pretty fun! I love playing with the sounds of words. Saying them out loud over and over again makes them seem to lose some of their meaning, you're left with an impression of the inflection. It's pretty cool.
