catnfish: It’s really good to know that yours is “applied one” that can be very useful! (no offence, to most of us apart from maths genius) I remembered back
Yes, maths can be useful! I remember at school people saying "i'm never going to need to be able to do this . . ." but fortunately all the maths I've done I use almost every day. It's nice to teach English once in a while because it means I don't have to do maths! :p

I speak French at the same level as I speak English because I went to school in France! It makes for quite a strange feeling - I don't feel British, and I certainly don't feel French. I did the IB and so I just feel international I suppose :D I'd completely agree with you when you said it has 'great effects on the personality' - I'm not really that similar to my British friends in the way I think.

China was always going to be one of the countries that would be OK with all the financial crisis going on (I still don't really understand how it just 'happened' - although the only economics I study is Engineering/micro-economics!) because of the sheer size of national/domestic demand. The UK is mainly founded in high-technology / financial services - in a financial climate where noone is buying it's not the best combination! My favourite place I went to in Beijing was probably the summer palace - absolutely beautiful place, great landscapes. I have a photo that has a pagoda and the forests in the foregroung, and the tall Beijing buildings in the background - it's the contrast of old tradition vs modern society that I think sums up Beijing!

How do you feel about the country opening up to foreign people and foreign cultures? Obviously everything is a lot more open now than even 10/15 years ago - I think China is going to blossom into a modern superpower but still remain strong to its traditions. It'll be interesting to see - I can just hope that I'll be a part of it!

catnfish: hey hey just noticed that we have the same birgthday! March 6th!

catnfish: ahaha.. Maths, talking about it the first thing that came out of my mind was the American Movie Beautiful Mind acted by Russell Crowe :) I used to thi
The Russell Crowe/Beautiful Mind does have quite a basis in reality for people who do pure maths! (my maths is called 'applied mathematics' - i.e. taking maths and applying it to real-world problems) My old maths teacher in high school said that he changed from maths (batchelors) to philosophy (masters) as he would've gone mad if he had done maths! That's a great Confuscius quote there - I should really read Philosophy more as at the moment I don't really know many good quotes!

GB is definately a small country when compared to China! (both population & size) I actually feel indifferent towards the history - given that I grew up in France, I'm not that attached to the country. I think our history is fascinating given the size of our country, but I don't like it at all! I feel that our colonial history was the country taking advantage of lesser-developed, lesser-organised countries for the purpose of making money. But, at the same time it's something I know I can't change and it's made us what we are today. How do you like your country's history? I've only really ever studied basic Chinese history in school (Great Wall, Teracotta Warriors, Qing dynasty . . .) so you're the expert on it!
shefdave 2009-5-4 16:27
catnfish: hmmmm, yes, it even took me a while to try to read it, let along  the spelling! It reminds me of some really evil Chinese characters (messy+ruleless) t
(if you have to try hard to learn and write the characters, try to imagine what I have to go through to learn them! haha :D)

I study Chemical Engineering, so thankfully I don't do chemistry all the time! (although that also means I end up doing maths about 75% of the time . . .) I love chemistry though, I think the best bit of it is when you do practical (laboratory) work that is much more exciting than just reading textbooks and answering exam papers!

I have no idea what the train station is - it's not only long, but it's in Welsh! I don't know if you have ever read Welsh language before - it is quite a strange language. (nothing like English at all - only about 20% of people in Wales actually speak Welsh fluently!)
shefdave 2009-5-4 15:58
Haha long word! The longest word in English depends on how you define 'word' - there are chemicals with very, very long names! (that I encounter all the time, it's annoying trying to remember them . . .) There is also a train station in Wales that has a name that is so long, they have to write the station name on two lines!
