Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are sworn brothers of Liu Bei. Liu Bei even sleeps with them and they follow Liu Bei all day.

    Guan Yu is really brave and can behead Yan Liang among millions of army. Real talent is always liked by people, Cao Cao likes Guan Yu very much, why? Because Guan Yu is useful. In 21st century, real talent is liked by people too. If you want your boss to like you ,you have to become talented at first, in other words, become useful. Guan Yu can conquer land for his lord, nowadays, you can earn money for your boss. Cao Cao is a good boss, he just treats Guan Yu well to show his nice attitude to employee. Guan Yu is loyal, even Cao retains him, Guan Yu won’t serve him heart and soul, hence Cao is too generous to let him go, that’s why Cao owns the biggest land during the period of Three Kingdoms.

  Liu Bei reoccupies the south of Yangtze River and then allocates high posts to his followers. In the same way, the boss earns money, he should allocate his profit to employee too, or else he’ll become bankrupt sooner or later.

  Guan Yu is too peacockish and hence isn’t capable to be a leader. A leader shouldn’t compete with his followers about the ability of doing things. Just for example, I’m a software engineer, if my boss wants to compete with me for programming, I’m afraid the company will be ruined sooner or later.

    Guan is a brave guy without fearing of pain. No pain, no gain. One must have the ability to bear pain and treats it as the first ability of life. Sometimes good thing isn’t always good thing, bad thing isn’t always bad thing. When Guan conquers Yu Jin and kills Pang De, he is so proud of himself, never dreams of his day of death is coming. Sun Quan wants Guan’s daughter to be his daughter-in-law, Guan even thinks Sun’s dog son isn’t good enough for his tiger daughter. Sun is one of three kings, Guan is only a general, however, Guan thinks himself superior than Sun.

     What’s more, Guan despises his followers. A leader who doesn’t love his followers, how could he expect his followers to love him? Mi Fan and Shi Ren are angry at Guan and don’t try their best to help Guan. Guan even claims that he is going to punish them seriously. Really a fool, this kind of thing, how could he say it open? Does he worry about other people not killing him? All people are born in society, no need to have individual heroism. The world can do without anyone, the strength of one people is always limited.

Guan’s influence in Chinese culture is huge, probably because of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, however, in Records of Three Kingdoms, he has only three pages.

Zhang Fei’s appearance and voice must be awesome. He can only use his voice to scare the enemy away. Guan and Zhang each has a fatal flaw. Guan Yu treats common soldier well but despises scholar-bureaucrats. Zhang Fei treats people with status and reputation well but doesn’t cherish common soldier and people. Liu Bei warns Zhang about this, but Zhang never corrects it. Finally Zhang is killed by mean people as expected. Both of them are people with courage, hence their pages aren’t too much.

Mao Chao is even worse than them, too impulsive and is easy to let Jia Xu use stratagem to conquer him. There is really not too much to talk about him.

Huang Zhong is a brave general and even struggles hard when he is old. Really nice spirit of struggle. Guan is not willing to let Huang to be included in the Five Tiger Generals. I don’t think he is inferior than Guan.

Zhao Yun protects the son of Liu Bei successfully, which is really a big favor to Liu Bei. Zhao is a general without obvious flaw. The biography of Zhan in Records of Three Kingdoms is really brief.
