Master of English

507 views. 2011-11-25 22:36 |

Maybe there is no need for me to read Oxford dictionary now. I feel I need to emulate the language style of master. I’ve read several English novels and find Mark Twain and Charles Dickens are my two most favorite writers.

Two adventure novels of Mark Twain are really wonderful. The boys in those two books are really vivid and the language is really vivid and full of American characteristics. A Tale of Two Cities is the greatest novel of Charles Dickens. Reading his A Tale of Two Cities, for the first time of my life, I enjoy the beauty of English language. Originally I always thought only our Chinese was the language of literature, English was only a language of science. When I read a part of A Tale of Two Cities, I changed my mind and felt English was a language of literature too. Charles Dickens is just like Du Fu of China, their styles are realistic. Mark Twain is just like Li Bai of China, their styles are romantic.

Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice are two great novels, both of which are reflection of female exquisiteness. Mastering those works as above, one can form his own writing style. I guess I have to read them at least thrice to enjoy the beauty of English.

By the way, there are many great writers in Russia. It’s a pity I’m not learning Russian now. Reading English edition of their works isn’t able to enjoy their language beauty, only content beauty.

Pay my deepest respect to the Masters of English!

As a girl, maybe pride and predudice is better for you. Though A Tale of Two Cities is a nice novel, but it's heavy, I'm afraid you won't enjoy it and hope there will be a man like Sydney Carton loving you all his life.

you are a serious reader, i, on the other hand, perfer something lighter. I love Jane Austen, though, in fact, my graduate paper is about Jane and her works. From my opinions, modern pop-novels are also good choice when coming to learn English. Mark Twain and Dickens are great writers, that's for sure, but their English is a bit old. For a native English speaker, that's fine. but for us, if we limited our reading only on them, and framed our writing style on that, it might be a problem.

Yeah, you're right. Even both of them are ginseng, we have to eat other vegetables to maintain our health.
I always like old writing because they can survive after so many years, which is originally a cruel test. Just like four great classical novels of China, all of which are old, but I like them more than modern novels except those by Lu Xun

Yeah, you're right. That's why one needs to master proper limits. Take Chinese for example. those guys learn classical style of writing don't confuse classical Chinese with vernacular Chinese.  You can't say one without knowing classical Chinese know Chinese well.

maybe i am not that qualified as  an English learner. i always regard Chinese as the most beautiful language in the world. the more you are into something, the more innocent you will be, just like love, which always makes us extremely blind.

Of course, Chinese is the most beautiful, just think of Tang poem, no other language can achive this kind of status...but English is backed up by US and UK. The so-called science and technology comes from US, we have to learn English.
