Originally I decided to use the title Gone with the Wind, but I liked the protagonist so much that I used Scarlett instead. Gone with the Wind was the first English novel I had read from A to Z. Thanks partly to the excellent language skill of Margret Mitchell, partly to the unique and charming character of Scarlett.
She was a really strong woman, physically and mentally. During peace time, she could use her fluttering eyelashes to conquer all men of her county. Though she was really smart, she could pretend to be innocent and said naively to men, “you’re really smart, how could I never think of this?”, which satisfied men’s masculine vanity perfectly, though she thought they were foolish in her heart, she used a charming smile to cover her heart. During unpeaceful time, she could try very hard to find food for her family and herself. She could use her delicate hands to pick cotton and even plough so that her hands were full of calluses. When Tara was about to lose because of the high tax, she condescended to beg Rhett in a smart way. She used curtain to make a dress and tried to capture him until her coarse hands betrayed her. Before she met Rhett in prison, she pinched her cheeks so that they looked pink and also bit her lips to make them red, I burst into laugh when I read here. She behaved herself regardless of others’ views. Scarlett said honestly she wanted Rhett’s money before their marriage.
Rhett was a rich guy. He didn’t have to work like me, hence had a lot of time to do things he liked. Because Scarlett was so unique a woman, Rhett fell in love with her. He was the only man who could get the upper hand of Scarlett, however, his heart was broke by Scarlett finally, because he loved Scarlett so much, though he was reluctant to admit it.
Ashley was a strange guy. He always said he was afraid of today and did love yesterday. I guess I could call him yesterday man. He couldn’t make money and wasn’t flexible enough, but he was kind-hearted and responsible. He loved Scarlett, but he didn’t want to elope with her to abandon his wife. This kind of guy wasn’t received well today, it was lucky he was handsome, or else, he would have a miserable life.
Melanie was the incarnation of virtue. Getting a virtuous wife like her was really the happiest thing for a man. Melanie was like a tender fleet, who was always a cradle for you, though which seemed to lack passion. Scarlett was like a volcano, who was always full of passion, but you could be hurt by her easily.
Frank was an honest guy, who deserved woman’s love and trust. But in real life, this kind of guy wasn’t well received by women. Gerald was the pursuer of American Dream. He did get a perfect wife. He never asked about the past of his wife, I thought that was why they got on very well with each other. The little girl Bonnie was really so cute, I thought Margret was a little cruel to let her die so young. I had fifty pages left for tonight. In a word, a nice novel, I liked Scarlett so much especially on her headstrong character.
