Dictionary Reading

610 views. 2011-12-8 21:51

I think most of people are only looking up a word in the dictionary, but I read it. Before I came to Shenzhen, I bought an Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary. I took a bag with clothes and the Oxford dictionary and came to Shenzhen in 2008.

Though I lived near University Town Library, I never knew it until last year When I was available, I read Oxford dictionary and wasn’t even bored. My first English dictionary is Students’ practical English-Chinese dictionary. When I came home this august, I saw it was in the drawer of my desk and became very old. It had accompanied me in Ningbo for two years.

Now the Oxford dictionary was right on my desk and looked like an old lady now. Longman dictionary came to my room to accompany Oxford dictionary a year ago. It was the first English-English dictionary, only by reading it, I could knew the real meaning of a word. Using Chinese to explain the meaning of an English word wasn’t very good, though at the beginning, you seemed to have no other choice. However, I thought those two dictionaries were English lady. US was the most powerful country in the world and made English a global language, even though UK was the cradle of English. So I bought a Webster dictionary half a year ago. Now I had three dictionaries in total. The Webster dictionary was the most expensive of three and an English-English dictionary too. Though my English wasn’t very good, especially knew clumsily the difference between synonyms, I had the ability to use English-English dictionary now and was pleased to know how English explained English. I thought I understood a word deeper by reading English annotation than Chinese.

I was a dictionary reader, hope someday I would met friend who liked reading dictionary, then I wouldn’t be so lonely on the road of dictionary reading.

I once read the xihuan dictionary, but never read english-english dictionary. It is a little difficult due to so many new english words. I wonder why foreigner create so many similiar words. It is so difficult to perceive their trueful meaning.

hehe i managed to remember every word in the oxford dictionary but its too difficult to carry on ,cuz we havent got  much time to read them in details . my experience is" more haste ,less speed" . most of us have a short memory . you learn some and you forget some . its really a learn-and-repeat effort .however i know one for real who had succeeded in craming the dictionary . you will be lucky .
