Comic strip was always the most favorite among books to me during elementary school. During my entire elementary school, I rarely went outside of the village. I could only went outside of the village by books, TV, radio and listening to stories.
During summer vacation then, I had neither TV nor radio for killing time. I had books, but most of them were textbooks. I read them again and again and felt bored, so Xundong was the only comfort to my spiritual world. He had rich imagination and could make a lot of stories. His family was poor and had to be a cowherd. I always accompanied him so that I could enjoy his amazing stories, of course nearly all of them were fabrication. I could remember all his stories were Wuxia. A guy was born poor and always teased by evil guys. For the most serious time, he was pushed down to hollow and didn’t die, instead, found excellent martial arts manual, finally became a Kung Fu master to punish those evil guys, of course, at the same time, several beautiful girls loved him. After listening to his hero stories, I admired hero so much.
But one day, he told a different story. The hero helped others under precondition. If one had money, he needed his money to help him; if one had beauty, he needed to sleep with him before he helped him; if one had nothing, he needed him to become his slave first before he helped him. I was really so confused, how could a hero do this kind of nasty thing? I asked Xundong why and he replied me the guy was just like that without any reason. Now Xundong is more than thirty years old and still single. Girls always say he is a really boring guy. I wonder how could a man change like that? His eloquence is totally gone and always silent.
From then on, I decided to read comic strip for I felt Xundong’s stories made me frustrated. Comic strip was a nice thing, which was not only about stories, but also pictures. Unfortunately, I always got tragedy comic strips. I clearly remembered one called Red Peony. It was about a young and poor girl. From her babyhood until death, the girl lived miserably, which made me really uncomfortable. So I decided to read Journey to the West and the feeling was really good. I read Dream of the Red Chamber and failed to understand it. I sniffed at its daily life description and thought I lived daily too, why should I read other people’s daily life? Now I understand that only daily life is the theme.
