On the World Stage With the Beijing Opera

726 views. 2012-1-17 12:46 |

Shi Min, part of the first group of post-graduates from the Chinese Opera Institute, is now a state first -class actress with the Shanghai Bejing Opera Theater She has won the prize for outstanding performance at the National TV Competition of young and middle-aged Beijing Opera actors in 1991 and the Plum Blossom Prize for National Operas in 1994.
Shi Min amazed the Beijing Opera circle when her troupe gave a performance in Beijing in 1993 performing the leading role in Hu Sanniang and Wang Ying, a newly staged historical opera by the Shanghai Beijing Opera Theater. An actor with such all-around talents is very hard to come by. Excellent in singing, acting and martial arts. Shi Min is said to possess the charm of Mei Lanfang. a prestigious performer and artist of the Beijing Opera.
At the age of 1O, Shi Ming enrolled at the Shanghai Opera School and hence started her hard professional training of non-stop practice — without even one day off for seven years running, Her major is wudan (vivacious young female roles). Two years before graduation, Shi Min took the qingyi course, playing a mure type (usually a faithful wife role, or a lover or a maiden in distress) under the guidance of teacher Zhang Meijuan, who thought that a wudan's roles were limited due to a lack of plays in the repertoire.
Not having a good voice by nature, Shi Min rode her bike for one hour to a vocal music teacher's home as soon as classes were over at 2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Perhaps being too tired after the training in school and the long ride on the way, she often made mistakes in singing and was blamed by the strict teacher. But she never gave up. Several times, the annoyed teacher even drove her away, but she came back again the next day. Moreover, she also learned the movements of qingyi role from Xu Meiling
Some of her classmates commended that "What you have endured is more painful than what Jesus had." But it was through her unremittrng efforts that Shi Min learnt to perform some well-known plays, including Returning Phoenix to Its Nest, A Life of Sorrow and Courtesan Yu Tangchun, which laid a solid foundation for her admirable accomplishments later on.
Born to a family of soldiers, Shi Min inherited from her father,a high-ranking army officer, his firm, decisive and endurable personality. Her mother, whose work is reLated with sports training, has cultivated her disposition of independence, confidence and her brave spirit.

Shi Min began to practice gymnastics when she was only five. She still remembers clearly how her mother never showed any   "sympathies" towards her even when the suffered fractures during training."You either give it up or keep it up,"she said. "Mother has seen too many tears and wounds and she knows one will not succeed if she cannot endure austere training." so explained Shi Min about her mother. With her mother's encouragement, Shi Min persisted and went for the entrance examination for the Shanghai Opera School when her cast was taken off. On the first day of school, after her mother helped her make the bed and prop up the mosquito net, the young Shi Min, unlike other children. asked to return home.
