Procrastination, undoubtly, the habit of putting tasks off to the last possible minute, is a very common phenomenon in people's life, studying, working and so on, which can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. Side effects include missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm, resentment, and guilt.
Procrastination, a psycholgical term from the Wikpedia(the free encyclopedia), refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time. Psychologists have pointed out three criteria for a behavior to be chassified as procrastination: it's must be counterproductive, needless, and delaying. Procrastination may result in stress, a sense of guilt and crisis, severe loss of personal productivity, as well as social disapproval for not meeting responsibilities or commitments. These feelings combined may promote further procrastination.
If we don't take the psychological aspect of procrastination into consideration, it is indeed not a good habit shaped in a long period of inertia life style. As far as I am concered, the behavior pattern of procrastination can be triggered in many different ways, so you won't always procrastinate for the same reason. Sometimes you'll procrastinate because you're overwhelmed with too much on your plate, and procrastination gives you a paradoxical excuse for escaping from the onerous and complicated tasks you can't consummate in a short time. Besides, you'll feel tired and lazy, and you just can't get going. So, what is the basic cause of procrastination?
The first and formost reason for procrastination, in my point of view, is laziness. When you feel lazy, even simple tasks seem like too much work because your energy is too low compared to the energy required by the task. If you blame the task for being too difficult or tedious, you'll procrastinate to conserve your energy. But the longer you do this, the more your resolution ablity will be weaken, and your procrastination habit may begin spiraling toward depression. As a matter of fact, everyone more or less has the slothful habit in their daily's life. They are either too lazy to complete a task arranged by their boss or taking it for granted to consider the programme too perplexing and formidable to cope with it on time. If you always feel lazy, you will lose some ardours and enthusiasm to ravel out difficult tasks. The counterproductive results will make you feel so depressed that you slowly give up the initial dream. So they gradually postpone doing these tasks and finally form a bad habit of procrastination. The more lazy you are, the more serious procrastination is.
The second reason may be attributed to the stress we have confronted in our life. When you feel stressed, worried, or anxious, it's hard to work productively. As we all known, in today's society, we have went through numerous pressure due to the rapid pace of life rhythm such as pursuing in higher life quality standard, buying a splendent new huge house, geting a fast promotion, fierce competion of intelligence and talents in various profession fields in a bigger city especially in a metropolis. As a result ,you may imagine the tremendous pressure we encounter in contemporary society. Increasingly, as the pressure accumulates, we begins to lose our motivation of going forward. At that time we shap the bad convention of procrastination which makes us unwillingly pause or delay our task planning time and time again. What a pity is that we just get nothing excepet for wearing away our time and energy.
In addition, poor time management habits may contribute to procrastination, which happens among these people who always don't accomplish the tasks on time. Although some people establish many time planning tables to schedule the studying or working time, they don't frequently deal with their tasks on schedule. They are inclined to put off the task's deadline, consequently, their life become disorganized and slack.
Lastly, pursuing perfectionism also results in procrastinationl. Believing that you must do something perfectly is a recipe for stress, and you'll associate that stress with the task and thus condition yourself to avoid it. So you put the task off to the last possible minute until you finally have a way out of this trap. Now there isn't enough time to do the job perfectly, so you're off the hook because you can tell yourself that you could have been perfect if you only had more time. But if you have no specific deadline for a task, perfectionism can cause you to delay indefinitely.
In rencent years, i always find i have formed a bad habit of procrastination. I remember that my mentor assigned me a task to read some medicine literatures and then write a summary according to the requirements. You know, finally i just procrastinated the reading time. I told myself that finishing these tasks in the next day is available and always thought that there is still much time left to complete it, so day after day i begin to procrastinate. On the other hand, As winter comes, the weather becomes colder and bleaker. i just can't get up earlier because of the cozy doss, i find that my willpower is so fragile that i just couldn't overcome some difficulties such as geting up earlier and lack of discipline and so on.
In sum, much emphasis must be puting on the consquence of procrastination. If we ignore it, we may fail to improve productivity.
