The harm done to health by cold weather is great

The harm done to health by cold weather is great

I live in a place where it can be very cold in the winter and cold weather is very harmful to health. I became aware of this when my dad died of pulmonary heart disease this winter. Pulmonary heart disease is a disease that gets exaggerated when the weather is cold. My dad, who died at the age of 82, was indeed old with a long history of the disease, but the cold weather sped his death.

During the days when I attended to my dad at his bedside in the hospital, I saw elderly people rushed to the emergency ward on stretchers every day. One of the examples was an old lady who died during my short leave to fetch boiled water for my dad, I saw her pushed in only ten minutes ago.  Most of the patients I saw those days came to the hospital because of the cold weather. Many of them tripped over on the terribly slippery streets clothed with ice and snow and resulted in cerebral apoplexy or heart attack. Some of them broke their bones when falling down.

I think I am still in my prime, but I feel very bad every year when it is the coldest. I have toothache, a sore throat or tongue, just like my state when I am typing all these. I still remember one winter when I studied in senior high school when I caught a very bad cold and tried different tablets to relieve my pain but in vain. I felt so weak that I couldn't even walk. For the first time my dad traveled a long way from faraway country side to where I studied and carried me to a traditional Chinese doctor. That was the first time I took Chinese medicine. After a miserable long week I finally got well, not knowing whether the medicine cured the disease or the virus exhausted what they needed to live.

The weather in winter up here is really bad. I hope people put on warmer clothes and be better guarded against it, especially old people.

my friend, so sorry to hear that. life is a circle to everyone, you me, and he /she, the same like so so. what we can do is enjoy our days we are healthy alive, care our body and concern our beloved. in cold winter, especially before the Spring festival, the chilly weather surely deprived many life, especially elders.

I would not be able to survive such extreme cold weather. I really don't understand why people choose to live in such cold regions. Once I was in North Canada, my god, it was so cold that my head was numb, eyes watering and I felt dizzy. Will never go there again. Although my ancestors are from cold climates but I grew up in South China, so I cannot stand cold weather. Now it is 9 degrees centigrade and I have a fan heater near me otherwise I would stay in bed and don't get up. Older people have weaker blood circulation and cannot generate body heat. They must have enough clothes plus heat assistance like a hot water rubber bottle. Previously I put an electric blanket under my mother's bed to keep her warm and it works well, otherwise she would be shivering all the time.

Hearing about the heartbreaking loss of lives and properties in Sichuan Province, I once asked a friend from the province why people chose to live in a place where lives were at risk. His answer was that they had been living there generation after generation and they didn't know how to make a living elsewhere.

I don't think all the people are so successful as to choose where to live as you do.

Agree with you in choosing a place to settle and live. I did not choose my place of birth and residence. My parents was transferred to South China for work and I was born here. I am happy about their choice because I am living a happy life here.

Rigid Winter is really hard for the elders. Last year, my parent-in-law came to visit us. He was attacked by emphysema as soon as he got there and stayed in hospital for nearly three months. There were several times his situation was really critical. Although in Northern Cities, the temperature is much lower, we don't have heating system here, so it's not easy for the southners to fit in.

I have to say that every winter is a hard time for me. I can't live a day without my down jacket on. I, nevertheless, shiver with cold. I guess thin people like me don't have much fat as a natural shield to fend off the harshness of winter.  Given that I am only in my early thirties, I feel bad, not knowing how I am going to  make it through each winter when I am old. How I wish I can grow hardy!
