Distinguish 4 and 10

Hot 4503 views. 2013-6-7 10:27 | difficult, control, mother, custom, topic

A friend bring in a topic, the southerner can't differ 4 from 10. His mother is a southerner, but she can't differ them. But I'm a southerner, it is not difficult to distinguish 4 and 10 in our language. they sound differently.
Some peoples can't differ them, just for they can not control their tongues smoothly and maybe that is a custom from the young age. Including S and SH, C and CH. Their tongue does affect our pronounciation of second language, it can be corrected by practising, but it isn't easy for something if it's a custom.
No matter where there are some persons who can not distinguish 4 and 10 easily. We can differ them by the other ways, such as by gesture which many people like to use somewhere.

The pronunciation is deeply affected by prople's dialect. Even though people make mistakes in some pronunciations, they can be understood very well. Besides, the wrong pronunciation leave us a guess about their hometown. It's funny, isn't it?

Well, that is what we call "accent". You place of origin can reveal your place of origin. I am also a Southerner but a foreign version. I was actually born in South China, therefore, I also have this funny accent when I speak Chinese. Actually, I am glad to know that even Southern Chinese cannot differentiate between 4 and 10 so I don't have to be embarrassed when I say those figures. Mouse and teacher sound similar in Cantonese so it is a nightmare for foreigners learning Chinese. I can speak Guangdongha perfectly but cannot speak putonghua. I have always wondered whether the Northern Putonghua is the same as Southern putonghua?

It is extremely hard to lose your original accent. In my city a super rich businessman could not shake off his Chauzhou accent despite living in Guangdong and Hong Kong for 50 years.

Even in English there are so many different accents. Listening to an Scottish or Irish man speaking English can drive you crazy.

People in East Asia including China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam cannot pronounce the "R" properly making it difficult for them to speak English like an English person.

I come from Jilin, north-east province.
My classmates laughted at me because I couldn't tell the difference of 平舌 and 卷舌 in my college life. And I failed to pass the interview of the announcer because of my terrible pronunciation. What a pity!
