No pains, no gains
It was just past 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning in Yuying experimental high school. The sunshine secretly slipped into the classroom through the window. Lily ,somewhat sorrowful, sat on the first seat near the front door.
That was the first place where I began to pay close attention to her. What was this little, thin girl thinking about?
In my mind, Lily, who came from a tiny and poor village alone the coastline, joined our class in a September day. She left everyone a deep impression with her typical ocean dark skin and far-from-standard mandarin.
The whole class burst into thunderous laughter as soon as she began her self-introduction. Without any exaggeration, her mandarin was all in a mess, one hundred percent mess. It seems that she wasunable to tell blade-alveolar and retroflexes, rising tone and falling tone clearly. Sometimes, we can hardly figure out what she wants to express.
I guess, maybe from that day on, she was under a miserable sky due to the tease from some naughty boys in our class. The teasers always repeated what she had said again and again, with a fairly weird accent and a waiting-for-fun face.
After I began to pay attention to this hot topic figure, she came into my sight now and then.
She did not talk too much, or scared of opening her mouth. Like a mute swan, she wandered in her own peaceful world, left us a silent view of her back.
One day, I accidentally came across her in a remote corner near the little lake in our school campus. Without realizing my presence, she lost herself in reading aloud. The book she tightly seized in hand was a text book from grade three, primary school.
A surprised expression quietly climbed onto my face, and then gradually turned into a well-understanding one. After that encounter, every time I passed by that corner, her voice came to me, clearly and firmly.
When the graduate day is coming, when she came to hug me and say goodbye, all of us were shocked by her smooth and standard mandarin. At that moment, the picture that an unyielding girl reading aloud by the lake occurred to me.
She is a real model of “No pains, no gains ".
