My life on Dioenglish has been hardly over one month, but the transformation of mind I experienced could be comparable to a decade of single-minded study, because through writing, the knowledge haphazardly crammed in my little brain has been actually sorted out and properly rearranged. Through this online communication, I have sensed the enthusiasm and the vigor of every writer on this website, the passion to learn and the ability to appreciate the intrinsically beautiful things and useful knowledge is immense. Hereunder I would like to say something about my understanding of a good taste in knowledge.
Each year, we have millions of college graduates entering into the society from the ivory tower where they had accumulated tremendous amount of knowledge through strenuous efforts. However, many of them lack the ability to think independently and courageously. Most of the knowledge they obtained are merely cramming of information into the yet naïve yet pure mind. A pliable mind is open to any information they touched without distinction. That’s part of the reasons that they feel so confused in facing of such a complex and ambiguous real society and believe in one thing at one moment and another at another. We need to have a mind of our own with the ability to discern what is good and what is not. Actually from our natural instinct alone, each one of us is capable of distinguishing the right from the wrong, the beautiful from the ugly, one of the proofs is that the most popular significant books or classic masterpieces were always highlighted with some instinctively beautiful, instinctively ethical information that is benevolent and caring to mankind.
I, myself, started my learning with cramming of information without discernment, luckily, I had a fundamental fond of literature and philosophy. During my reading, I encountered many great writers like Russel Bertrand, Steven Covey, Montaigne, and Lin Yutang, whose beautiful writing, witty thinking, positive attitude, the profound sympathy to the suffering of mankind and unlimited love to mankind, touched my soul deeply. I could not be as great as they were, but through their work, I gained a positive attitude and quite a rational philosophy of life and a discernment of right and wrong which is a precious treasure and a strong spiritual bulwark against all the toughness of the world. I believe that the knowledge we acquired through such a strenuous effort should be helpful not only to building of a strong and loving society but also contributing to a happy life of our own.
