It is of no logic of any kind that we should treat so harshly to those who are close to us. Yet, we see so many abuses going on in so many families or organization of any kind. Abuses, physically or mentally, to the elders, to the young, between the spouses and among the colleagues, have created tremendous amount of suffering and pains in the family, and in the society at large.
The children are victims who received the most damage, because of their weakness and innocence. While physical abuses should be avoided by sparing no efforts, more attention should be given to the mental ones, due to its’ indirect and long term effect and the general negligence on this matter. I had started my boarding life in one of my relatives since I was eight. I excelled academically in the school, neglected coolly in the boarded family, mentally abused in forms of distrust, unfairness, scolding and total negligence. The remembrance of that period of my life I recalled with reluctance even at this moment of narrative and dropped with joys.
The first reason for treating badly to people close to us is because of our high expectations, which in many cases quite unreasonable and we could not make it ourselves. Second, the egoism is tend to work most violently in the family due to long suppressing of it in the outside world and ready to go burst any time in the more comfortable environment. Third, many people treat the dead better than those who are still alive in the family. Fourth, total lacking of humanity. Reasons could be listed on and on.
From my opinion, the fundamental and wonder remedy to this social disease is from an old saying which was widely regarded as the most fundamental foundation to all the religions of the world, please read it by heart and get the essence of the content:
Do not do unto others what you would not have done unto yourself, do unto others what you would unto yourself. And, do not do unto yourself what you would not do unto others. Do unto yourself what you would do unto others. (已所不欲,勿施于人,已所欲方施于人。人所不欲,勿施于已,人所欲方施于已。)
In essence, treating others as good as treating ourself, and treating ourself as good as treating others.
