I have been contemplating this fundamental question of why and how to be happy for long time.
Being a man, with such desirable qualities as being responsible, masculine, protective, generous and high-mindedness, should be happy in the first place so as to exude his happiness and affect the others around. Altruism is of course has a starting point of being beneficial to his own, a happy life is much preferable to being melancholy and moody and painful, some people have the tendency to be unhappy to attract sympathy, or for enjoying the sentiment of being sentimental, an example in point is Boronic unhappiness, of which life is vain and vacant, but it is against human nature and in contrary to the purpose of human existence. We are endowed with it by nature and born with it at birth, the desire to be happy, only the growing up later on stifled and extinct this desire.
We are all product of the society and culture at large, the freedom to choose is affected by the environment in which we grow up, that’s why for some, the pursuit of happiness is so much more tedious than others whose environment of growing up are favorable. Ubiquitous assimilation, a concept I leaned from a movie, Detached, stated that we are exposed to the negative influence from the environment, the press, the culture 24 hours 7 days. The importance of reading is obvious, so that we could discern the good, to draw nutrition, to cultivate a rational value systems of our own to protect ourselves, and ultimately to lead a life with a satisfactory state of mind. We know also that our mind is a pliable thing, it could be so narrow as a needle which stick to the point of painful things and could not be removed easily, it could also be as large as the world and be versatile in many object.
From above, a rational value system and a broad mind, in my views, are the key to lead a happy life.
