Guangdong Province Museum

Guangdong Province Museum is a comprehensive museum, located in No.215 Wenming Road, the former site of Zhongshan University and was built from 1957 to 1959. Surrounded by time-honored banyan and ceiba trees, it occupies an area of 29,000 square meters (about7 acres), collects over 124,000 items including porcelain, painting and calligraphy, Duan Ink Stone, gold and wood carvings, coins and other excavated articles. More than 300 national first-class distinct culture relics are hosed here. Some of the only collection in China as the Ink Dragon Painting by Cheng Rong who is famous in the Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the White GlazeStatue of Sakyamuni and the Monkey King Duan Ink Stone in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). 

The museum is made up of three main parts: The Exhibition Hall, The Site for the First National Congress of Kuomintang and The Memorial Hall of Lu Xun The Exhibition Hall is a modern equipped newly-built in 1992. The four sides of the walls are carved with white bas-relief which tells famous figures and important events in Guangdong history. There are 13 Exhibition Halls, two Prelude Exhibition Halls and an Academic Lecture Hall. To the south of the exhibition hall, three 
iron cannons and a 4,000 kg siderite felt down 300 years ago were displayed in the open air. Within the hall, 2,132 items are displayed to show the political, economy, culture and transportation development in ancient Guangdong; 1,244 items shoes Guangdong’s modern history from the Opium war to the Revolution of 1911.


The Site for the First National Congress of Kuomintang and the Memorial Hall of Lu Xun are in the Clock Tower in the courtyard of the museum. The brick-wood construction was once a part of the Imperial Examination Hall of Guangdong, gaining its name for the four clocks in four corners of the building. The First National Congress of Kuomintang was held in the auditorium in the tower. The arrangement inside is preserved to be the same as the original one. On the west of the second floor were the school office and bedroom of Lu Xun, one influential writer in China, when he taught in Zhongshan University.
 
The new Guangdong Province Museum was put into use in june,2009. The display is enriched to more than 130,000 items in total, includes 25,000 geologic relics, samples, fossil, books, and references and offers considerable service. It becomes more mature than before. Since then, the museum has become a symbolic culture facility of Guangdong and a national high-rancked Directed by the idea of historical folk-custom, art and nature, the new exhibition has three parts: History Exhibition, Nature Exhibition and Art exhibition and is made up by the displaying system, the management system of collected articles, comprehensive service system of education and scientific research system.

The local style is a feature of the new museum and most of the displays focus on the folk culture and handcraft. The embroidery in China is famous for Su, Xiang, Shu and Yue. Here, you can see the essence of Yue Embroidery. Porcelain is renowned all over the world that is why people nicknamed China as the kingdom of porcelain. In Guangdong Province Museum, you can discover almost all the types of porcelain dating back to earliest New Stone-Age pottery to the marvelous and exquisite porcelain toddy. The improvements and the history o porcelain are in front your eyes. The Chaozhou Wood Carving is wide spread in Guangdong province. Originated in the Tang Dynasty (618-790), the arts still exits today. The works are complicated and satiation, refined and careful, resplendent and magnificent. The perfectly carved carvings ironically show the customs and the humanistic spirit of local people.

Transportation:

Take Subway Line 1 and get of at Nongjiangsuo
Take 3, 11, 12, 50, 54, 59, 65, 80, 125, 183, 184, 215, 243, 248, 541, 543 and get off at Guangdong Province Museum.

Take Tram Bus 104, 106 and get off at Guangdong Province Museum.
