[Weekly topic] revolution of college entrance examination

894 views. 2009-5-8 14:09 |

A student's overall performance at school will be added to the scores he/she gets at the national college entrance examination to determine his or her eligibility to enter colleges in the future, said the Ministry of Education. What's your opinion on this?

Here student's overall performance include the regular grade and overall evaluation at school. Personally speaking, the revolution is successful or not depending on the standards for how to evaluate it, it seems a little unfair for those children in the county, they aren't allowed to improve themselves in all aspects as lacking of money.Only if they make it to university can they have chance to change their lives. Anyway, the practical implementation of this revolution will take a long time, and surely its advantages and disadvantages will be exposed throughtout time.

I think if I understand correctly - this is essentially what happens in the UK at the moment. Do you mean an overall performance from start to finish, or just (for example) the last 2 years / 4 years of school? In which case, as Ley says - how are we going to fairly judge student performance? It will be difficult to keep such a system impartial and free of cheating.

In the UK system (which I didn't go through ) you usually have to do coursework which is marked independently throughout the final 2 years of school. (A-levels) This is essentially judging performance throughout the 2 years. Most of my the subjects I studied in France in my last 2 years were just examined in 2/3 exams at the end of 2 years - created quite a bit of pressure to not mess them up!

I think no matter we adopt this or not, the key is to complete education system as to train teachers (including raising teachers' salaries haaa), or revise text books..

Since we've got a large population, it's not that fair for students to across the narrow foot bridge in order to realise their dreams.~

Evaluating students' performance from start to finish at school is difficult and worthless.Pre-university gap year may solve that problem. The point of a gap year is that it should be the time when the school leaver gets to do the things that he or she fancies.kids can get huge growth throuth work, travel, ect. That will get kids more prepared to benefit form university or to decide positively that they are going to do something other than a degree.
