Between The Devil And The Deep Sea ---- A Tragic Love Story
Translated by Smiling Angel
Once upon a time, there was a guy who was very much in love with a girl. The romantic guy folded 1000 paper cranes as a gift for his girl. Although at that time he was just a small executive in his company, and his future didn’t seem very bright, but they were tremendously happy together. Until one day, his girl told him that she wanted to go to Paris and never come back. She also told him that she cannot visualize any future for both of them. Hence, she thought they had better go their own ways, there and then the guy poignant and broken-hearted, but he acceded.
When he regained his confidence, he worked hard day and night that slogging his body and mind just wanted to make something out of his career. With all his arduous effort and the help of his friends, this guy set up his own company eventually.
“You never fail until you stop trying” he always reminded himself”. “I must make it in life”.
One rainy day, while he was driving, he saw an elderly couple who were sharing an umbrella in the rain and walking to some destination. Even holding an umbrella they were still soggy and drenched. It didn’t take him long to recognize that they were his ex-girlfriend’s parents. With a heart in getting back at them, he drove slowly beside the couple and wanted them to spot him in his luxurious sedan. He wanted them to know that he wasn’t the same anymore; he had his own company, car, condominium and so forth. He had made it in life!
Before the guy can realize, the couple was walking towards to a cemetery. He got out of his car and followed them. He saw a photograph of his ex-girlfriend who was smiling as sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone. And there was a bottle placed beside the tomb that enshrined his precious paper cranes.
Her parents saw him. He walked over to them and asked them what had happened?
They explained that she hadn’t leave for Paris, she was diagnosed cancer. In her heart, she believed that he can make it someday. But, she did not want her illness become his burden so that she had chosen to leave him.
She instructed her parents to put his paper cranes beside her. In this way, if the day comes when fate brings him back to her again, he can take some of the paper cranes back with him.
Tears trickled out of the corners of his eyes. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them but knowing that you cannot have them and will never see them again.
