In the end of March this year, a kind of flu called H1N1, have took a trip around Mexico. Suddenly, the god of death fell on this country. Wide range of people got sick, they dared not go outside and all public activities stopped. In the following months, the disease spread to many other countries. On June 11, 2009, the WHO declared an H1N1 pandemic, moving the alert level to phase 6, marking the first global pandemic since 1968. Fortunately, the death rate of this disease is relatively low, about 0.1% outside Mexico.
Let’s take a looking back. In 2003, SARS spread all over the world, and in 2006 bird flu. During the recent decade, different pandemic disease came one after another, taking hundreds and thousands of lives.
Is it the punishment of God? We never know. But one we do know is that human activities have done great damage to the environment of the world. The earth is getting increasingly hot, which may become the seedbed of new kind of virus. The depletion of Ozone leads more ultraviolet rays come to the earth, which may cause the mutation of the virus, turning the virus into a more virulent one that no existing medicine can deal with. That will be disastrous for human beings.
What will happen tomorrow? Who knows? Although great attention has been attached to the protection of the earth------ the only place we are living in, the deterioration of the environment continues. The rivers stink, fish dying out. The air is full of dust. Air-conditioners keep running all the time. It’s ironic that a board of so-called experts are discussing fiercely how to improve the environment while enjoying the coolness of the air-conditioned room. We need more action than words.
