Higher Education of China

671 views. 2012-5-28 12:03 |

Currently, while China has witnessed a remarkable advance in higher education, problems in this field have aroused public concern. Numerous examples can be given to demonstrate this viewpoint, but the compelling one is the case that there are too many graduates can’t find jobs. Statistics show it isn’t easy to find a job within two years for a student who has just graduated. Secondly, people in the past failed to realize the significance of higher education, but the situation is changing too rapidly: So many students take the college entrance exams and enter universities that, today, people think that to get higher education is the only way out. Thirdly, the higher education in China only focus on theoretical knowledge not social practice, which can’t meet the needs of labor market.

In my opinion, society and government should create more job opportunities for graduates, pay more attention to the quality of higher education instead of its quantity, and require students to learn more practical skills and develop their unique talents. Only in this way, every graduate could find an ideal job, and higher education of China will solve the problems and make real progress.

China’s ministry of education revealed that over 25 percent of the students who had graduated this year, were unemployed.

Roughly one million graduates live in squalor on the outskirts of China’s major cities and commute into the cities to work each day. They have been termed “ant tribes” for their low social status, poor living conditions and frenzied job seeking.

An official report last year found that after years of study, often using up their families’ life savings and after graduation,  the average wage of a college graduate was similar to that of rural migrant labourers.

The education ministry effectively introduced a “user pays” system for tertiary education, ordering a trebling of university student numbers without adequately increasing government funding. This ultimately led to a dramatic rise in student fees. This expansion of education was bound up with the transformation of China into a cheap labour workshop for global corporations.

Students are now being forced into fierce competition for jobs, with employers quick to capitalise on the resulting desperation.

The Chinese authorities insist that graduates must accept whatever job they are offered or set up small businesses. However, the latter “option” is largely unrealisable for the vast majority of poverty-stricken graduates who would have exhausted their financial resources paying for their fees.

Students study hard hoping to have good jobs and a secure future. Seems their dreams are not coming true.

My dear friend. Thanks for your comments. There are many bad news in China you don't know. As a senior in China's university, we alwasy confused. Under this situation of the education system in China, the higher education in China only focus on theoretical knowledge not social practice, which can’t meet the needs of labor market.
My major is art education, four years have past, and I only know some theoretical knowledges. That is too bad.I firmly believe, If you were a gold, you would shine where ever you go.
As you said,"Students study hard hoping to have good jobs and a secure future." That is true. I totally agree with you. Thanks for your attentions.

For your information, it is NOT much better in the United States and Europe. There are lots of unemployed qualified students. The economy there is weak and hopes are falling.

In England, it is better because they have a good diversiity policy encouraging people around the world to contribute and as a result the economy benefitted.
-  make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business;
-  an education system which encourages knowledgable and skillful graduates
- to create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe
- help graduates in all sectors to grow and prosper.

Thanks for your attention, and also, we have the same situation in China' s education system. In other words, we have no choice to give up our school work. It is due to that we are the only hope for our family, and our parents think that  to get higher education is the only way out. Some times, we are fed up with  the burdensome homework, we have done our best, on the contrary, our dreams still have not come true. It is a tragedy!

The sudden expansion of higher education started in 1999 is a matter of double edged sword. The job problem was only delayed because of the expansion, actually, in terms of job creation, with a booming economy continually for more than three decades, china is doing the best in the world. we are in the era of information, the society need more knowledge workers not less, education in college is only a small part of our lifetime learning, an attitude of lifetime learning, a broadened view of life and the world are what matters. Unfortunately, the focusing on the academic learning created enormous numbers of graduate who were crammed with lot of information but could not think independently and creatively. This problem, I believe is the real tragedy of our education systems.

Thanks for your comments. We must admit the advantages of China's education. In a way, China's education has improved quality of citizens. There is nothing to be said against it. On the other hand, we must see  lots of faults of China's education. Such as they only focus on theoretical knowledge not social practice, which can’t meet the needs of labor market. As for me,it is due to the education system of China. In our university, there are too many
abuses in our courses. The leading just pay more attention to  the quality of higher education instead of its quantity. In this situation, we have no choices. Sometimes, we confused. We need the government pay more attention to our actual learning.
