An Elegy for 1900

1210 views. 2012-6-30 11:16 |

Las night we had a farewell dinner with Jiayi, one of my colleagues, who submitted his resignation a month ago and plans to restart his career and have a brand new life.  In fact, he isn't the only one at the table or even in the office who'd like to quit the job which means pain and frustration as well as salary for someone. But in the end, few of us manage to accumulate enough courage to make a change except keeping grumbling all the time.

To some extent, we are all the Hamlet who is always hesitating between "to be" or "not to be", we are all the pianist in the The Legend of 1900, who hesitates whether to stay on board or to go ashore even though there's the girl he loves ashore, even though there may be a better and different life awaiting him ashore.  To 1900, people and things on the continent are too complicated to cope with compared with the piano with only a keyboard of easily predictable 88 keys. It is just the fear of uncertainty that bounds our feet to move forward. Like what Roosevelt once said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

Nobody knows what the life will be like for him, including himself. Only time will tell. However, no matter better or worse, it always takes risks to change and courage to face the change. After all, it's not easy to find one who knows exactly what he wants, and even harder to find one who will put it into practice.

It's hard to say goodbye to you, Jiayi. Only after separating do we find your kindness, do we realize that we have ever got a dear friend who has walked with us through ups and downs, joys and sorrows during the journey of life for some time neither short or long. Farewell and all the deepest admirations and best wishes for you. Looking forward to seeing you again and a bright future for all of us.

That's exactly the truth. And after all these passers-by's leaving, We ourselves will get off the train somewhere sometime and become others' passers-by as well. It takes luck to become acquaintance, and even more to become friends.
