The culture crisis

454 views. 2009-6-11 14:10 |

From the last 10 year to nowadays, an increasing number of students have to learn English almost everyday in order to pass exams including national college entrance examination especially, so no matter whether or not they like or have interest in English, they have no choice but to spend lots of time on English learning, to some extent, the time is longer than that they allocate to Chinese learning.

It’s really a gradually change that almost all students who are from junior high schools to colleges or universities reckon that English score and level is more important and imperative than Chinese one, in my opinion, in this sense, the phenomenon is that more and more students pay less attention to Chinese learning while the time which is spent on English accelerates and accrues quickly and dramatically, in other words, because we student are young and we delegate the new generation of our nation, our culture has been and will lose gradually in the near future.

In my viewpoint, there are two reasons: the first one is the requirements of national development. In order to communicate and to gain more information and technology from the developed industrial countries, whose main languages are English, French, and German, many developing and impoverished countries have no choice but to accept these foreign languages, china is also of no exception, and the outcome is also easy to speculate as another truth that an growing number of students get lower and lower scores in their Chinese examination while the counterparts of English are cumulative.

Another phenomenon of this reason is that the level of culture masterpieces has been going down in the recent years compared with those which were written by some celebrities in the early time in no matter fiction, novel, essay, prose, verses, poem or opera. Considering opera, I think almost all students pay no attention to it, and some of them even know nothing about it, actually, opera, especially the Peking Opera, is one of the most famous culture relics and heritage of china, and it has a thousand-year history, however, in the near future, it’s hard to save and especially develop it because of the depressed interest amongst our residences.

I have heard that a policy has been put forward to require primary school students learn Peking Opera, I am not for this policy, because although that is a approach to saving our historic cultural heritage, but it’s just a superficial way apparently, if you could incentive or spur the interest or curiosity of culture in pupils’ potential heart, the results maybe even worse, we could predict it’s hard of a student to learn what he or she dislikes. What’s your opinion in this issue?

Another reason is that because of the requirements which are given by the companies, enterprises and government HR departments during job hunting. The requirement of English level which is given by various HR departments of almost all industrial units becomes higher and higher, which is another reason why stacks and heaps of students whose age ranges from 12 to 22 distract themselves from Chinese learning but English.

This is an interesting phenomenon, nearly all students get a English score which is higher than Chinese in their national college entrance examination, and a vast majority of them receive the admission notice from high-level universities due to their prominent English mark. Don’t forget that we are Chinese, and we have learned Chinese much longer than English, why don’t we pay more attention to our language or maybe allocate and use our time symmetrically between English and Chinese learning?

Aha, I think I am a patriot, and I think there are thousands of compatriots like me in china, it’s might be a right to consider how to save, cultivate, foster, and improve our national historic culture.

great words, it hits my heart. i always believe our chinese is a very beautiful language, especially the ancient poetry. i like them very much. the ancient peots always could express their mood or emotion with very few words.. Don't you think it is very magical?
considering chinese learning, we shouldn't forget another important part, that is handwriting! less and less people have great handwriting talents, since we put less and less time on it. it would be definitely a huge pity if we chinese lose it.

aha, actually, i really admire and adore these Chinese ancient poets, because of their inviting and prominent handwriting and calligraphy, and all of these are the beautiful and dramatic Chinese cultural heritage...

However, the truth is that a growing number don't choose to practise their Chinese writing but English, it's really a little bit absurd... hard to accept, hehe... what's your opinion?

i think it is regretful, but still acceptable, after all we have to make a living in the society. even if some of us love the chinese culture, we couldn't spend much time to study, because we have to study many others to cope with our work. this is maybe the reason why we communicate here in english. haha

i have  recited many poems and much of them have become part of my memory. but after graduation, i have hardly anytime to study them, instead, i spend much time on english study (though my english is still poor till now, hehe...) and this is certainly not what i want, but i can't help.

just like what you have described in your blog, that there are some politic ,economic reasons which compel our to learn english, though now our country lies in the so called third world country, developping country, but our country had been so prominent in the ancient times, such as our four great invention and the great culture, so we have the obligation to make them known to the world, so in another view, we learn english is to communicate with people around the world, make our country to be known by the world ,then there will be more and more people to learn chinese and try to understand our culture actively. our chinese cholligraphy is an culture and art in essence! many foreigners friends like me to explain our chinese character through there combination.just like the chinese character "hao" means that a family having a boy and a girl may be the best.
