Kiss from a rose

There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey.
Ooh,……..

The soft and sweet melody penetrated the heavy, hectic working atmosphere and soon filled the whole office. A fleeting sensation of familiarity passed over my body and all the exhaustion caused by the long time buried in work melt away. I found it hard to focus on the pile up work on my desk, so I stepped out of the place where I was working and only to discover that I was not the only person who was carried away by Seal Lyrics' deep, melancholy voice. L, who was playing the song through his computer, hummed softly with the rhythm. His expression changed, dimmed as if he'd gone away somewhere, quite far away place where only long lost memories existed. P also stopped his work, and gave a full stretch of his body. There was an air of satisfactory relax ion about his pose. S finally raised up his eyes form PC and asked: " What's name of this song?"

" Kiss from a rose." L, P and I gave an almost spontaneous answer. There was a flicker of something that might be called as comprehension coming through us and we looked each other and smiled understanding.

S looked confused. " It is a good song. But what does that smile mean?"

" It means generation gap. It's a song very popular in our colleague days. But of course you are too young to know that." P answered his puzzle. His tone held a subtle mocking note. Our office is generally divided into two groups: the ones who were born in 1970s and the ones who were in 1980s. So the jokes about generation gap are never stopped.

S murmured improvingly: " Phoebe, are you also familiar with this song?"

" In fact, familiar is not good enough for description." I answered lightly.
How could I forget " Kiss from a Ross"? Even after so many years, that turn always bring to mind those days I was in college. An awkward boy once used this song to take a move on my roommate Ying, after that, it was played again and again in our tiny dormitory through a small broken tape recorder. With its company, so many bitter and sweet days had passed by. But like many other campus love stories, this one also had the same sad ending: They decided to break up when they found their life paths seemed to be going in different directions upon graduation. I still remember quite clearly now about that chilly night. Ying sat quietly on her bed, her face was mask like in its lack of expression and there was an air about her so melancholy that I felt it hard to bear and I had to do something to break the ice. So I came toward her and said: " What do you want to do tonight? Whatever you want, I am in." She responded to my question without a second thought: " I'd like to have a couple of drinks, are you with me?" " Great idea. I've never drunk in my life. It's time to taste the real life." I said in an exaggerate way. Then we went out and brought several bottoms of grape wine back. The other girls were all shocked at our purchase, but soon they joined our wild party. Those days close to graduation were filled with worries for the future and tears for departing. We all badly needed a break, no matter how wild it seemed. After the numbness a bottom of wine brought up to me, the only thing I could still remember was the familiar melody of " kiss from a rose" floated the whole room.

I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey.
Ooh, the more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.
Yes I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grave
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.

Seal Lyrics' voice finally broke off, so did the vivid bygone days. With the song was dying; the office came back to its normal businesslike routine. I signed and came to my work.
