English and Me

1180 views. 2011-8-19 17:02 |Individual Classification:Daily Life

“How to translate ‘They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious’ into Chinese?”

Carol’s QQ message popped up when I was dangerously close to dozing off.

“Harry Potter?” I couldn't be more familiar with this sentence  and typed back.

She was deeply impressed. “Just one sentence. How did you know?”

I was listening to Harry Potter’s MP3 when I rode a bicycle to my office, but I didn’t plan to tell her about that. Vanity, the first sin, guilty as charged.

他们是这世上最不可能同稀奇古怪的事情沾上边的人.” I replied.

“Wow, your translation is better than the Chinese version I downloaded. I got all confused when I read it.” I didn’t know where she got the Chinese version, but if it is worse than mine, I seriously doubt it could be readable.

I sort of built a reputation about my English ability in the company. My colleagues would come to me if they met with any English-related problems. Last year we were asked to choice a long-term goal for self-study, and naturally I chose one thing I might be good at and always interested: English. Anton was so amused at my choice that he actually burst into laugh: English, Seriously?

However, I don’t know what’s so funny. The worst thing about learning English is if you rest, you rust. As simple as that. To make it even worse, I lack all those qualities required for to master a foreign language---strong memory, silver tongue, and outgoing nature---i have none. I even don’t have a proper education background---I graduated from a third-rate colleague, majoring in Electronic. Although I managed to get my bachelor degree in English as self-taught student, it doesn’t count on many ways.

So many years have passed by after my graduation, I never quit learning English---at least not completely. I simply couldn’t---that’s might be the only asset I can recommend myself. But I haven’t gone through any systematic learning either. I improve my abilities simply by reading English novel, listening to MP3, writing English blogs and watching American soaps. It’s a lifelong project, so why not get as much fun as I could? Sometimes I doubt that I got a bit obsessed---for years I haven’t read anything except they are written in English, and I can’t shake off a sense of guilt if I watched something on TV without English subtitles.

Still there is so much to learn. Is this a wrong to go? The truth is I am really not sure.

i've already developed a habit of learning English. like it or not, it just has become part of my life. That's all. i have certain doubts, but i don't regret. after all it's not easy to find something you could hang on to. set the goal, and stick with it. easier to say. to actually do it is another story.

starting from something you are familiar and interested, not too difficult. if new words popped up in every few sentences, basically you could pass. for me, i start with Agatha Christina's books. i have a thing for detective stories and her works are easy to catch. or you can read something you like in Chinese version, then go to English version. however i don't suggest that you read them at the same time. focus on the way of expression, not on the new words. that would also be helpful. forgive me if i said too much, after all that's just personal experience.

When reading your blog,I can even find myself.I also felt wasting my time and regret as or after watching some TV shows without English speaking. But some days ago,I realized that maybe it's one-sided for us to only read English related books. We should also read many professional books related to our jobs .
