English and Me

“How to translate ‘They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious’ into Chinese?”

Carol’s QQ message popped up when I was dangerously close to dozing off.

“Harry Potter?” I couldn't be more familiar with this sentence  and typed back.

She was deeply impressed. “Just one sentence. How did you know?”

I was listening to Harry Potter’s MP3 when I rode a bicycle to my office, but I didn’t plan to tell her about that. Vanity, the first sin, guilty as charged.

他们是这世上最不可能同稀奇古怪的事情沾上边的人.” I replied.

“Wow, your translation is better than the Chinese version I downloaded. I got all confused when I read it.” I didn’t know where she got the Chinese version, but if it is worse than mine, I seriously doubt it could be readable.

I sort of built a reputation about my English ability in the company. My colleagues would come to me if they met with any English-related problems. Last year we were asked to choice a long-term goal for self-study, and naturally I chose one thing I might be good at and always interested: English. Anton was so amused at my choice that he actually burst into laugh: English, Seriously?

However, I don’t know what’s so funny. The worst thing about learning English is if you rest, you rust. As simple as that. To make it even worse, I lack all those qualities required for to master a foreign language---strong memory, silver tongue, and outgoing nature---i have none. I even don’t have a proper education background---I graduated from a third-rate colleague, majoring in Electronic. Although I managed to get my bachelor degree in English as self-taught student, it doesn’t count on many ways.

So many years have passed by after my graduation, I never quit learning English---at least not completely. I simply couldn’t---that’s might be the only asset I can recommend myself. But I haven’t gone through any systematic learning either. I improve my abilities simply by reading English novel, listening to MP3, writing English blogs and watching American soaps. It’s a lifelong project, so why not get as much fun as I could? Sometimes I doubt that I got a bit obsessed---for years I haven’t read anything except they are written in English, and I can’t shake off a sense of guilt if I watched something on TV without English subtitles.

Still there is so much to learn. Is this a wrong to go? The truth is I am really not sure.
