Do loudly---Part 2

608 views. 2011-11-8 15:56 |Individual Classification:Reflection

In any way, this optional free PPT was much more important that it seemed to be. However, S didn’t see it through and she was the only one who had not prepared in advance. Consequently, S was also the one who being challenged the most. Besides without a proper PPT to present, S also made another mistake: she didn’t understand a bit about the authority’s focus, not at all----KPIs, reports, records, analysis result—these are what the bosses want to hear about. She should emphasize what she has done with them, but instead, she talked about access cards—something might be at the bottom of bosses’ care-about list. I know why she had brought that up---the customer she met was very tough, and always gave her a hard time when she applied for access cards. In fact, we will all have a lot to say about that damn card application. She could mention it, but she should never make it like her first priority. No wonder J’s face grew sterner and sterner. He cut her short with a lot of questions: why it took so much time? Why not make an appointment first? Why not prepare better before going to the customers. Poor S, she really didn’t stand a chance.

After JT started her presentation, I mentally whistled: Now we had a winner! JT certainly is standing proudly out when it comes to Do Loudly. JT basically pissed off everyone in the company except those who carry weight. Before this meeting, I thought her best talent was manipulation, that is, she always has a way to shift her duty to someone else. However, after this meeting, I knew I had underestimated her---a lot. Frankly speaking, we all half expected to see her present, and she certainly gave us quite a surprise.

She got to the point by starting with KPI reports and grasped the boss’s attentions immediately. “She doesn’t do this report! She simply combines it!” S’s angry QQ message popped up at my computer’s screen. I shrugged and didn’t know how to reply this. No matter what, you have to admit that this girl certainly knew how to play smart. It took her about 15 minutes talking about a report she made little contribution but KPI happened to be the top priority of the boss’s concerns. So she simply scored!

I always thought that as assistant, many of our work are pretty detail-oriented and hard to be counted into our workload. However, her presentation told me how wrong I could be on this matter. She list all the items we have done, I mean, Cover-it-all, one hundred percent! Things like Holiday Notice to the customer, none of us mentioned that in our slides, I mean how many holidays we have in a year?

Another thing caught my attention is the subtle way she complaint about her workload. When she talked about GR, she said softly: “Sometimes I have to do twenty to thirty GR within a day. It’s a bit annoying, you know.”

We all stared at each other. None of us except her mentioned GR because we completely forgot about it. What the hell GR is? Ok, here’s a rough idea: You log into a system, you click a confirm button and you make a GR done! Ok, I admit here I really don’t know what to say. No matter what, she certainly made an impression here.

That’s my study note for this meeting. Everyone has certain way to cope with life, so there is no need to feel put-upon or hold grudges against those who obviously have gained more favors from the authority---everything happened for a reason, you just need to figure it out.

hehe... dear, nice to read your this blog. because i saw a serious clerk in her job duty. i never saw a clerk to write meeting note before. to be frank, hehehe.... i'm again to say this word, you have mind preparation, maybe when i say the word, i will pour my full idea and thoughts,hehhe....

to our job, i always feel we should try our best. in fact, from your this blog, i read your full power in your duty, and i can iamgine you do it well on your position. an assistant is not easy to do well, you have been reach your secret to keep your boss satisfy. just as you blog's say here, your different colleagues have different "show"  on the company's business meeting, whether their behave right or not, whether we think they should be like what a report style, the result is boss's score, that's a company's value. actually, dear, your this blog has entered into my job duty, as a hr, i should research the different action style, and promote on thier different duty power, rise a final KPI, really is the  professional words  in my work field.

to be frank, again, hehe..., dear, from my view, you have owned more power and ability on your duty,if i'm a boss, i will think how to make you play more roles in my company. always my best wishes together with you, wish good luck!

i seem to have some trouble with your technical terms like access card and GR.
i don't think i stick to old ideas. actually i like new things and try to be an open-minded person. however, some things formed over the years are hard to change, even if you want to. for example it would be hard for me to do loudly. do we do things just for others to see? maybe it is kind of out of date nowadays. maybe sometimes we do need to take our work as a show. i don't know.
it is said doing business is a war without gun smoke. after reading your article i found it could be a war between some collleagues, struggling for a good position or favor. i know it's life and competition is just unavoidable, but i prefer to compete with myself, always trying to improve myself. sometimes we have to ignore some trivial matters and lead a simple life. sorry just some ramdom thoughts. good luck my friend.

actually i learned this from lovingfun, a friend at dioenglish. the whole idea struck me as a good working strategy. you know, i have a withdrawn nature and i hate to attrack too many attentions. but in company, in this competitive world, i realize my withdrawn nature is always holding me back. i used to believe that as long as i got things down, i would be a competent employee. however, experiences kept telling me that it's not enough. in this corporate world, to make things done is not enough, you have to do it loudly---to make the others know, or at least to make others be aware of your existence. Otherwise you would always be the one getting passed over for  promotion and opportuntiy. however, theory is just a theory. it's easy to say, but to do is totally another story.

why feel sorry? i'm very glad to hear your say on this matter. in fact, we have a lot in common. Just like you, i always thought if i fulfilled my duties, if i made things down, I could live with a good conscience on my paycheck--i've already done my part, as for the rest, better leave it to the fate. besides i hate to attract attentions. if it's up to myself, i would prefer to do silently.  that's the way i've always done my job. Even i got passed over for promotions or opportunities, i'd never considered making a change. like you said, old habit die hard. now, i start to observe, to learn, but everythings remain at a trial stage. honestly, i have no intention of going any further. I might make some adjustments, trying to fit in a bit, but i never want to become someone like JT. because if i need to force myself into someone esle to climb up, to reach the so-called success, i would rather pass. Simple life suits me too. so in fact, this study note is more like a joke

I am also observant in that no fine details can escape my attention. Sadly, the difference between you and me is that, having discovered how office politics help a collegue, to word it your way, to score, I  despise loudly whereas you learn. I have to admit that my metality is out of dateand dangerous.

I already said that I had no intention of passing any judgements, so I'd better save my opinions here. In fact, I don't see much difference between you and me, different approach toward things---that's all. I observe and I will learn, but just at certain level. Like I'll learn how to apply myself better in the company---at least i'll give it a try. Honestly, I got tired of always let people like JT getting an upper hand.

oops, my fault. I guess such things happened when you tried to communicate in a foreign language. i never felt offended, not at all. when i read your first comment, i completely understood how you felt about this phenomenon----because that's what i felt. but i already decided not to judge, and tried to look at it from a new angle, so I said i saved my opinion here---certainly that's not to you. if there was any issues between the lines, please understand that's also not to you. so never take back your comment, you are more than welcome here.

I have to accept that JT is smart. When people's talent shows little difference, JT's skill paly the role. I must admit it is a important and necessary skill.some one were born with the gift,  some must learn about it, and I am the worst learner.

Thanks for your explanation. Now I can understand Do Loudly. I'm the one who can concentrate on my work and finish it on time, but i'm not capable of finishing it perfectly and let other notice what i did. In a word, Do Loudly is true of me. I'm the one who also need do loudly.
