Why do you want to learn English and what makes you to insist on learning?

Hot 3978 views. 2016-9-28 11:27 |Individual Classification:Reflection| learning, English, English

Until now, I have insisted on English learning for about 98 days. During these days I’ve spent 190 hours in total, which means that I’ve learn at an average of two hours a day.  As a working mother who has a nine-year old boy and a husband who is always busy, I have to spend most of my time in work and family. These two hours are pretty much all I could have for myself.

So here’s the question I’ve been asked a lot lately: “Why do you want to learn English?” An interesting question. Honestly, I don’t have any strong motive for that. My job requires me to do some English writing once in a while, like reports, emails, or newsletters.  However English writing has never been my problem, and I could handle them with much ease.  Besides that I don’t have many opportunities to use English. See, no pressures here at all. Therefore for many years, I’ve accepted the fact that as an English major, my oral English sucks. Really sucks, I mean it. Whenever coming to speak English, I become tongue tied. Like there is a magic switch existed, my mind just shut down and went into a total blank.  But I comfort myself by saying: “You are just shy. You don’t even speak much in Chinese. So what’s the big deal?” We can always find an excuse if we want, aren't we. However, lie is just a lie, no matter how comforting it is. I am an insecurity freak. There is always an inner voice whispering: “You have only one life to live. As a human being, you have to have something you could be proud of, something you are really good at. But what do you have?”  English seems to be the only one left. But it’s not something that I could boast of. If someone says: “Oh, your English is good.” The only reply I could give is “But my oral English is terrible.” How desperately I want to change that. Then finally I decided to give it a try. I took a course from an English Learning APP.  I’ve surprised that I could have persevered for so long.

I guess here I must underline the importance of the team spirit. I joined in several WeChat groups and got to learn several incredible learning partners. They all have a busy life, fully occupied with work, family and social activities. However they all do their best to finish their daily learning—never stop for a single day.  G is like me, also a working mother. Her boy is two year old. We all know how demanding a two-year-old could be. So it’s pretty impossible for her to learn at night. To finish her learning, she gets up around 4 o’clock in the morning. And when she has some free time at work, she goes to the toilet to learn English. Can you imagine that? She averages more time at learning than I do and always stay at top 5 in class (out of 227 students). M is a working father who has a busy job. He usually stays late to learn and has also been remained at top 5. There is only once he failed to do his homework, precisely not failed, just two minutes late. That’s the day when his mother-in-law was ill and went into the hospital. C is a girl who loves travelling. Travelling is also the major purpose for her to learn English. Just like me, she is good at English in other ways except speaking. Once she and some friends went for an international trip, while her friends already used body languages and some broken sentences to express themselves clearly, she had still been struggling in mind to organize the words into sentence. After the trip, their friends said jokingly: “We’ve heard that your English was good!” Just imagine how she felt at that time! I fully understand, because I had been there--many times. To have enough learning for learning, she controls her shyness and study during her commute to work in the street---she walks to the office.  Anyway, with teammates like them, any excuse is just a lame excuse.

Now I have made some improvements. I’ll still try and see what I could achieve in the future.  Perhaps one day I could say it without any hesitation: “ Yes, I am good at English.”

Very laudable spirit! Whatever we do, insistence is one of the keys affecting our success. For English learning, it's not enough to memorize large amounts of words, we should also improve our ability to apply them in real practice. I am also an English fan, and I've been dreaming one day that I could speak English as fluently as those natives do, while the fact tells me that it doesn't work that well by practicing oral English alone. Unfortunately, I can not find partners to have conversations with, because others would not pay much attention to English improvement and some even would think it's of no use.  So I'm wondering what kind of app you are using, if it really works, Do you mind introducing it to me?

I can't agree with you more. I took coure "懂你英语“ in APP "我爱流利说”. I think its very helpful for me. But just as you said English Learning is all about perseverence. It's like fighting a battle, if we fought alone, we might sometime feel lonely and easier to give up. I am lucky  to have some great learning parterners. And with them, it has becoming much funnier.

I like to read your articles. Your writing is purely smooth just like you were born in an English speaking country.
I use to have similar problems with my speaking as you. It's because of that, I pick the words in my mind first and then I say it.  It caused a delay in between words. Also I worry my listener who may not understand. I think the hesitation in speaking is a common problem for English learners.
I have a secret weapon to boost my confidence of speaking . It definitely works for me. Now I can confidently speak to the local western people, meeting with someone, making joke to friends. I don’t think I speak English fluently but at least I can speak well. My downside is lack of words in speaking , so I am targeting to build-up my vocabularies.
I am happy to share my experience of using “secret weapon” if you want, however it might not work for you.

Haha, there is no such thing called “secret weapon”. It just has been emphasised. However, I would like to tell you a true story and it has changed the way of my speaking style.

When I first came to Australia for about one year, my boss gave me a company car with a mobile and sent me to do onsite services. At that time all mobiles were analogue which meant voice call only. Although I did technical work, I had to communicate with my clients, my office and the spare parts. This job for me was pain in the neck.

One day I went to the spare parts for solving a problem from the order. Storeman Peter was a funny white man. Sometime he got troubles to understand what we asked for because some service technicians came from other countries. Sometime he pretended not to understand us and questioned us just for making us embarrassed in front of many people. I believed he wanted to see our shy face. This time Peter wanted to play me with the same manner. However, he got unlucky this time as I fought back. As soon as he started to ask what I had said, I repeated loudly with the same words confidently. In my mind, I thought English is my second language, what do you expect to say? Don’t you think I can speak like you? No way…… . So continue to play game with him.

I said: “Hey Peter! Do you understand English? I am speaking with you in English. What else can you speak other than English? I can speak Chinese.”
Peter became silent and quickly finished the service for me as he knew he only can speak one language which was he born with it.

Since I fought with Peter over frivolous issue, I gained my confident in speaking. I no longer think too much when speaking and my tone slowly became more natural. I really didn’t care if my sound was wrong because it will likely get right next time.

I hope you can realise something from my story. If you don’t care, no one care. I do believe you will able to speak well if you can write well.

Wow, what a great story. Thank you so much for your share. Confidence indeed plays an important role in speaking English. I admire your courage to stand on your feet and fight back. BTW, it's a nice counterattack. And mostly important, through this experience you've built up your confidence. I am working on that too. My way is a bit slow. Like they said, characters decide your destiny. I have to build up my confidence through practice, practice and more practice. I  could hardly open my mouth before I prepare myself well. I've made some process. This summer, on a trip to Europe, I could handle most of the daily conversation, and once or twice even argue with the foreigners about hotel, car renting issues. It's a major step forward for me
