Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine--Book Review

678 views. 2020-4-14 16:16 |Individual Classification:Review

Sometimes it’s so damn hard to be happy. Life tends to play tricks on us, and even our memories play tricks on us. Happy moments eventually disappeared in the long tunnel of time, but those unhappy ones, no matter how furiously you’ve tried to bury them deeply, would emerge time to time, jump at you at the most unexpected moments and haunt you down till the end of the world.

Eleanor has a terrible childhood, being constantly abused, ignored and denied by her mummy—a pure evil, selfish and cruel woman. Her little sister, Mariana, is her only sunshine, the only person who once truly loved her in her miserable past.

One day her mother set a fire on purpose, in an attempt to get rid of her two daughters for good, however she died at the scene, so did Mariana. Only Eleanor miraculously survived.

It brought me tears when I read that badly injured ten-year-old Eleanor re-entered the fire, trying to rescue her little sister but unfortunately failed.

After the fire, it was just too painful to think about Mariana, so Eleanor forced herself to forget. Mariana had disappeared from Eleanor’s life, as well as the only warm, happy hours they’d together. Eleanor forgot that she had a sister, and she once had been loved, accepted and understood.

However, her mother stayed permanently in Eleanor’s memory. Somehow, she pretended that her mother was still alive, talking to her over the phone every Wednesday, still controlling her, abusing her.

Scientists say that there is a self-protection system inside us, but they never tell how it actually works. If our brain knows how to protect ourselves, how could it let those happy memories slip away so easily and obsess with those bad influences in our life?

The people you find it hardest to forget, is probably the person who treats you the worst. And the world goes on, regardless what happened.
