The Mark on the Wall

902 views. 2012-7-25 11:51

I have read a typical article of Virginia Woolf, The Mark on the Wall, which illustrates us with the stream of consciousness novel.I have insisted on it off and on for several days. When I finished the article,I discovered what the writer expected us to know is a snail—the mark on the wall.

I think the mark on the wall is a breakthrough of auther’s iminagination. In her ideal world, there are only several points about the mark.I consider that the author herself just need something vigorous to breathe into her mind.Thoughts are expressions of one’s feeling, and also are accumulations of outside world. She cared more about her daily touches and experiences so that she could think more broadly without the limition of objective things.

Sometimes, our attentions are affected by many different causes. The main character is always devoting herself to finding a peaceful life.I still know that in the first paragraph there is a typical sentence—I looked up through the smoke of my cigarette and my eye loged for a moment upon the burning coals, and that the old fancy of the crimson flag flapping from the castle tower into my mind, and I thought of the cavalcade of red knights riding up the side of the black rock.Red knights represent the war and an unpeaceful life. This unconscious illusion may be developed at a very early age and deeply rooted in her life. However,it doesn’t mean what she want. She once wanted to get out of it until she discovered the mark. And also, the mark guided her to find more about meanings of her life.

She admired a life of peace and freedom. But this requirement is very tough to reach. She hoped to live a peaceful and steady life without others’ disturbing. What we engage in and aspire to achieve is what we are lacking in our daily life.Obviously, influences of wars attached to her mind rootedly. As a result, she was disturbed with it from time to time.

After having finished this article,I can conclude that the auther’s opinion is free. Her points sprang from one to another without any logicality. She wanted to describe more about her viewspoints than other things. It basically puts aside the reality and outside things and almost explains everything the author can imagine besides something related to the mark on the wall.

Virginia Woolf made readers know that people’s subjective consciousnesses are valuable. She just took advantage of the mark to be an assumption and then broke forth many unrelated ideas. Also, she pursued for people’s spiritual world and abandoned for objective factors. She made stream of consciousness novel real and fascinatic. This had to let critics admit the great influence and literary stature in British.

I also think that the success of The Mark on the Wall lies in its revolution. It’s a pioneer work of stream of consciousness novel.Compared with traditional works, its difficulty also lies in its pure spirit. This kind of works also need complicated content to make up the whole structure. It also needs author’s abundant experiences and versatile abilities.

In rear section of the article, the writer has the description of a tree and relevant scenes, which makes the article more delicated and experienced. It is full of author’s pleased feeling. It is also more attractive.

All in all, through this article ,I consider it stream of consciousness novel is far more than what people think of.To write a perfect sample like this, the author needs extraordinary conceptions such as cultural, minded and emotional expressions. Of course, she also needs inspirations and wisdom of literature and art.She needs to utilize what in hand to breathe life into her article and at the same time makes readers spiritual world broader. It’s an exellencant article.
