The movie was released in the US on November 21, 2008 and it is originated from the bestseller novel "Twilight". I have heard of the movie`s English title months ago. But when i saw the movie in chinese, I just did not relate "暮光之城" with "Twilight". After i have made this out, I feel kind of disappointed about this high box-office movie. I have read so much laudatory commend on this movie and hope for a too much high expectation. Anyway ,it is a movie worth seeing.
The movie tells a romantic and impavid story between two adolescents in high school.
Bella moves from sunny Phoenix to rainy Forks because of her parents` divorse. Reluctantly, she lives with her father for not willing to interrupt her mother`s new marriage. At Bella`s new high school, she meets Edward Cullen, a cool, stylish and handsome young man, who seats next to her in the first class and seems unwelcome to her. But after that Edward warms up to her and saves her life in a car accident by flying to her immediately and stopping a car with his bare hand. This makes Bella very puzzled. She determines to figure this out herself after Edward`s denying on any questions. After she hears a tribal legend from a family friend, reads some books and searches on the internet, she doubts that Edward is a vampire. Finally, he confesses that his Cullen family are vampires who drink animal blood instead of human blood and that Bella`s blood allures him very much so he trys to avoid contacting her in the beginning. Bella shows little fear about all this facts and over time they fall in love with each other. When their relationship comes to a new stage, an incident happens. Another human-blood-drinking vampire family appears and James, head of which, wants to hunt Bella whose blood is desirable to him. James got Bella in his hand by claiming he is holding her mother captive. Just at the critical moment, Edward appears and the Cullen family killed James. Once they realize that James has bitten Bella's hand, Edward sucks the toxic blood from her body before it can spread and transform her into a vampire. After Bella has healed, she and Edward attend their school`s prom together. During dancing, Bella expresses her desire to become a vampire, which Edward refuses. No one concedes, for their selfless love.
Here are some critical reception from others:
The critical reception for Twilight has been mixed. Bookist wrote, "There are some flaws here–a plot that could have been tightened, an over reliance on adjectives and adverbs to bolster dialogue–but this dark romance seeps into the soul." Kirkus wrote: "[Twilight] is far from perfect: Edward's portrayal as monstrous tragic hero is overly Byronic, and Bella's appeal is based on magic rather than character. Nonetheless, the portrayal of dangerous lovers hits the spot; fans of dark romance will find it hard to resist.'' Publisher Weekly's starred review described Bella's "infatuation with outsider Edward", their risky relationship, and "Edward's inner struggle" as a metaphor for sexual frustration accompanying adolescence. Hillias J. Martin of School library Journal praised the novel, saying, "Realistic, subtle, succinct, and easy to follow, Twilight will have readers dying to sink their teeth into it."
