Beautiful Wuzhen

423 views. 2009-11-3 08:42 |

Last weekend, our department organized an autumn tour with Wuzhen, a famous water town as its destination. At beginning, I was not very interested in the tour because I went there once several years ago and found that it had little difference with other water towns like Xitang, Zhouzhuang and etc. In my eyes, those towns present to us the same sight: Along the two sides of a slowly flowing river, there are many old houses standing in tightly knit blocks. Most local people have changed their houses to small shops which sale small commoditieslocal products or snacks. And those so- called local products or snacks are the stereotyped stinky toufubraised porkcrisp candysalty sauces and homemade handspun cloth.

But this trip is far beyond my expectation. Except Dongzha, the old part of Wuzhen, we visited a new developed area Xizha, a wonderful place integrates old resource with fresh idea. It is said that the government has cost 800 million RMB to purchase all the old houses here from the local people and change them from private residence to taverns, bars, boutiques and shops with fairy good taste. Now it becomes a quite and beautiful place where fashion mix with tradition and simplicity mix with delicacy. When looking out of the boat we rent, I saw the most glamorous picture I have ever seen: small lanterns of taverns fluttered gently in the breeze; in front of the tavern, friends or couples sat comfortably in cane chair, enjoying the pleasant scenery and chatting leisurely. Suddenly, I feel a kind of inner tranquility and spiritual recovery. All the work pressure and anxiety seems to floating away in the very moment…If I have chance, I will come to this enchanted place again, with my husband and son.

small bridges, flowing stream and old houses-- an unique picture which I like most, although I have not been there.

It's a place where nature and human society have surprisingly been tied up.

I'm glad to hear that you had a wonderful time there with your family which also reminds me of my visit last year! It's quite a nice place as you've illustrated that I don't need to stress again. There's another thing I think I can share with u. During my visit I found time to talk to those locals as well such as boat rowers etc, and they told me some interesting stuff. Basically the government wanted to turn this place into a traveling spot  so that they've asked lots of people moved out of the old town on which they built the new WUZHEN (I guess it's the DONG ZHA?) where we see. Each of them has got a pretty good amount of money and they led a happy life after. It's really good to see that they didn't ruin the place, instead, they made it a pretty one.

But Wuzhen's slightly becoming a dead city as far as I'm concerned. It's like other old towns along our east coast, young men go out for better job oppotunities, leaving their oldaged parents at home. Once they pass away, it's going to be a problem that no one wants to come back for living here. And it'll be a town with no one living in there. It's a pity indeed if that happens!

New Wuzhen is called Xizha. Dongzha is similar with other water town and  there are still peope living inside, while Xizha is totally a commercial place with all local people moving out . Turisits can live in tarvens which were retrofited from  local people's houses. I think it is great!
