What sort of reading is effective

I was required to read three famous books and then make a report. At the begining, I really could not used to reading books. New words and culture conflicts obstructed my reading all the time. So I had to think about how to read and what kind of reading is effective.
Today I got an idea. Firstly,choose an interesting book you like. Then make sure that you can know sixty percent of the words and expressions of that book. Just 40 percent are new for you. Otherwise you will get a little gain from the reading. You will be always in looking up dictionary because of the new words. That will decline not only your reading interests but also reading speed. After you check out the words, you have to pay more time to get what the author's real meaning. That way is not wise. Another thing you should do when you are reading is taking notes which contain new words,expressions,and wonderful sentences. That will help you inlarge your vocabulary, improve your writing, and making you more familar with country cuture. That way should be more wiser.
Anyway, whatever we do with English learning, we must require gains from our doing. Dont waste our precious time in doing useless thing.
