Birth,Marriage and Death

693 views. 2010-6-6 10:54 |

Birth, marriage and death:these are the greatest events in human life,Many things :good and bad ,can happen to us in our lives.Yet these are three days which are usually marked by some kind of special ceremony:the day we are born, the day we get married and the day we die, these are the three main events in life ,we only have choice in the second of these :we can choose whether or not to marry. But we have no choice in birth and death.
All human beings from the most primitive to the most sophisticated are affected by these three events. The only thing that differs in each society is the way these events are celebrated,Yet all societies share common characteristics.
Birth is a time of joy,the pround parents receive congratulations and prents on behalf of new-born.the special wedding ceremony and receive presents to help them set up their home ,Death is a time of sorrow and is marked by specail ceremory and mourning. The dates of all three events are usually remembered.

You reminded me of a sentence "When you are born, everyone was laughing except you. So make sure to smile to everyone, everything in your whole life. If so, when you are dead, everyone will cry except you."

There are two points upon which I can't agree with you.
1. The problem of date choosing.
Suppose that these three events are the most important in our lives. I agree that it is totally out of our hands as to when we can be born. However, as for the third event, death, we are not entirely at the mercy of Thanatos. We can choose the time and the way we meet our end before he comes to us. Or simply put, we can commit suicide. You can still argue that even this kind of death is predetermined. But I'd rather believe that it's an enactment of free will and the most courageous or the most cowardly way we can choose to defy our destinies.
2.  The inclusion of marriage
We have to ask ourselves this question, can marriage be counted as one of the most important events for everyone of us? Given the fact that a lot of people, some of whom were among the greatest philosophical thinkers history has ever seen, such as Plato, Kant, Hegel, etc. have lived a celibate life, I don't think the answer to the question is positive. If I were asked to choose a substitution in case that marriage is absent, my choice would be the day when we are disillusioned. The disillusionment is a rather abstract concept. For some it is the day he is converted to some religion. For others, it could be the day he becomes an atheist. This list would go on endlessly. The quintessence is that we have found, or at least we believe we do, the way or the direction to sort out the mess of the whole world and by doing that we are rewarded with spiritual satisfaction. Admittedly, for some of us, or perhaps most of us, that day will never come. We just live our simple, happy life, carefully avoiding those mind-twisting issues. Then, what we are faced with is the task of finding another substitution, which, I believe, no matter how hard we try, would be a less noble one.
